Woman, 24, left with ‘face caved in’ after freak accident while walking dog – her warning to others

A WOMAN is issuing a warning after her year-long recovery from a freak accident that caused her to lose her eye during a routine chore.

Daniella Abreu, 24, went blind when her dog’s leash snapped and hit her face while she was walking her husky in her neighborhood of Stuart, Florida, which is about an hour’s drive from Palm Beach.

The medical assistant took her dog, a 60-pound husky named Blu, on a nighttime walk on August 7, 2023.

Abreu chose to use a retractable leash for the walk instead of her usual rope leash and didn’t think anything of the decision.

“I have originally always used rope leashes,” Abreu told The U.S. Sun, explaining that she only used the retractable leash on the day of the accident.

While on the walk, Blu lunged toward a rabbit and yanked Abreu forward, causing her to pull the leash back to try to keep the dog in control.

In an instant, Abreu’s life was then changed forever.

“As he was running one way and I was pulling the opposite way, the friction of the leash just snapped back and repelled, hitting me right in my eye,” Abreu told People.

“It happened so fast but I knew it was bad immediately. The force of the leash was so traumatic.”

Abreu said blood gushed out of her right eye while she rushed to get to her house, where she lives with her parents.

“There was so much blood. I thought I completely lost my eye, so my flight or fight mode kicked in and I was able to run home,” she told the outlet.

“I ran inside screaming. My mom got to me first and I just fell into her arms and got really pale. My dad, oh my goodness, his face was so frightened and terrified.”

She eventually fainted because of the pain.

“Even though it may not have been a life or death situation, at that moment I obviously didn’t know. I knew it was a pretty severe situation though,” she said.

“I was losing a lot of blood and eventually I just passed out. All the shock going through my body just overpowered the feeling.”

Abreu was taken to a level-one trauma center, where it was revealed she suffered a split eyelid, a fracture underneath her eye, and a retina detachment.

Timeline of Daniella Abreu's recovery

Daniella Abreu, 24, lost her eye after her dog's retractable leash hit her in the eye.

August 7, 2023 – Daniella Abreu suffers a freak accident and is taken to a level-one trauma center. She learns that she suffered a fracture under her eye, a retina detachment, and her eyelid was split open. She soon learns that she’s gone permanently blind in her right eye.

June 2024 – Abreu goes through her fourth surgery and is fitted for a prosthetic eye

August 2024 – Abreu gets a prosthetic eye, which will need to be replaced every three to five years

When she woke up, Abreu said her face looked “caved in” – and the pain was overwhelming.

“The pain was a 10 out of 10. I started hysterically crying because it was so bad,” she said.

After emergency surgery at a hospital in Miami, doctors told Abreu that she was permanently blind in her right eye.

“Even to this day, I still don’t believe it’s true,” Abreu said.

“I had to put my entire life on pause. I went from being a super active girl – on a competitive dance team, working out on the side, a full-time job – and I basically had to take a year off of life.”

After multiple surgeries, doctors decided to remove Abreu’s eye because the damage was so severe.

In August, she got a prosthetic eye that will need to be replaced every three to five years.

YEAR-LONG RECOVERY

Abreu, who has taken her story to TikTok, said her road to recovery was difficult.

“I had to basically relearn everything,” she explained.

“When you have both eyes, you’re used to opening them at the same time.

“But my right eye was stitched close so I had to gradually learn how to only open my left eye, which was straining and it caused me more pain.”

On TikTok, Abreu has issued multiple warnings to dog owners to always use rope leashes instead of retractable leashes, no matter the size of the dog, to avoid a freak accident like what happened to her.

“My life in a way now feels so normal,” Abreu told The U.S. Sun.

“After a year of hardships I am at peace with my reality and have accepted what my current situation is. It doesn’t need to be perfect I just need to be happy and that’s what I am now.

“Although I miss being able to see through two eyes and being completely healthy, I understand that I had to go through this to share my testimony with people who are going through a similar situation,” she said.

Lowe’s apologizes to angry shopper raging service is a ‘travesty’ – says he’s still waiting on order after 7 months

AN ANGRY customer has raged online after Lowe’s customer service let him down.

The unhappy shopper took to X (formally Twitter) to complain about the lack of service provided after waiting seven months for a door.

Getty
A Customer has complained about the poor customer services experienced at Lowe’s[/caption]

They wrote: “Has anyone experienced the travesty that is Lowe’s Installation Services.

“I am still waiting for the door I ordered in February. Lots of excuses, little service provided.”

They ended their post by tagging the retail company.

In an act of good faith, Lowe’s apologised to the angry customer.

Commenting underneath the post, they said: “We’re sorry for your experience.

“Please contact our case managers via DM as they have access to your order information and will be in the best position to assist you.

“Thank you.”

It comes after another angry customer took to social media claiming she was overcharged at Lowe’s Market.

She shared a post on Facebook, laying out the alleged overcharges and reporting that she was also billed for an item she didn’t purchase.

post by user Rachel Thornton has stirred up frustration among shoppers after she shared a photo of her receipt.

In the post, she said that she was overcharged by $15.01 during her recent visit to Lowe’s Market.

Thornton also claimed she was charged for an item she never purchased: cherries.

She marked up her receipt, highlighting the specific items where she believes she was overcharged, sparking a conversation among other customers who had faced similar experiences.

The post quickly garnered attention and comments from other frustrated shoppers, who suggested their own solutions and shared their grievances with the store.

One commenter suggested, “Easy fix. Quit shopping at Lowe’s.”

Another emphasized the importance of taking control at the register, writing, “That’s why I do self check.”

“They are crooks,” a third user claimed.

Meanwhile, customers at Lowe’s have been crying out over a store layout decision.

Some claimed the retailer should’ve separated its decorations better in certain areas as the holiday season approaches.

It’s no secret that stores nationwide are already prepping for Halloween and even Christmas.

Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year in the United States, is only 64 days away.

Home improvement retailers like The Home Depot and Lowe’s offer a wide selection of decorations for Halloween far in advance.

A Lowe’s customer went to his local store recently to check out what was already available earlier this week and was furious at what he found.

“This is wrong on so many levels,” wrote shopper LeVolker Cox in a post to Facebook on September 23.

Cox included an image of the decoration section at the Lowe’s store, which featured large Halloween and Christmas items seemingly mixed together.

Giant scarecrows and ghoulish skeletons playing guitars were next to Christmas trees, inflatable Santas, and snowmen.

“First, putting ghouls, ghosts, and witches next to Christmas decorations is wrong,” Cox fumed.

HOLIDAY MISSED

The shopper also felt that while Halloween decorations being available was reasonable, sales shouldn’t have started yet on the items given that it’s still over a month until October 31.

“Second, it’s more than a month to Halloween, and some are already on sale,” he argued.

Cox was also offended that while there were plenty of Halloween and Christmas decorations for sale at Lowe’s, there was supposedly no Thanksgiving decor.

“Third, they totally ignored a special day of Thanksgiving,” he wrote.

“It’s over 3-months to Christmas.”

SPECIAL EVENT

While some Lowe’s customers might not be thrilled about the retailer’s decoration decisions, they can look forward to MyLowe’s Rewards Week starting on October 10 and going through October 16.

The member-exclusive sales event awards customers discounts of up to 40% on a wide variety of merchandise, including holiday decorations, bathroom products, decor lighting, select tools, and storage essentials.

Additionally, those members who spend at least $50 or more will earn a $5 cash bonus in MyLowe’s Money to be used on deals.

Those who don’t have a MyLowe’s Rewards account can sign up now for free before the event begins and take advantage of other promotions and discounts all year long.

The Sun launches Winter Fuel SOS campaign to help thousands of pensioners worried about energy bills

TODAY The Sun launches a Winter Fuel SOS campaign to help thousands of pensioners worried about their energy bills.

More than 800,000 older people risk missing out on the £300 Winter Fuel Payment — and other benefits they may be entitled to — because they have not first registered for Pension Credit, which unlocks access to the payment.

And the extra money will be even more welcome after this month’s ten per cent rise in the Energy Price Cap to £1,717.

But good news is at hand, with our Winter Fuel SOS crew ready to offer advice on getting all the money that is yours by right.

In her July statement, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced that this winter, only households in England and Wales that receive Pension Credit or certain means-tested benefits will be entitled to the Winter Fuel Payment.

Previously it was available to everyone aged over 66.

The decision will strip ten million pensioners of the tax-free handout.

There are just weeks left to claim, so it is essential that those who are eligible apply now.

An estimated 880,000 UK retirees could be entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment yet will miss out because they did not register for Pension Credit.

We have heard from readers who cannot work out if they are able to claim the benefit.

Others have said how worried they are that they won’t get the Winter Fuel Payment this year — raising fears they won’t be able to afford to heat their homes.

We want to change that.

That’s why we have gathered together a top line-up of experts — and our Winter Fuel SOS crew will be taking your calls this Wednesday.

We want to hear from you by phone or email — and it’s fine if you are calling or messaging on behalf of a friend or relative.

Our panel includes former pensions minister Sir Steve Webb, pensions expert Baroness Ros Altmann and consumer champion Martyn James.

They will be joined by The Sun’s Head of Consumer Tara Evans and Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements.

And even if you aren’t eligible for the payment, our team will be sharing tips on how to switch energy providers and save money, get help if you’re in debt or simply need to save this winter.

Your cases will be considered by our panel, who will aim to give you advice within one week of your call or email.

Caroline Abrahams, of the charity Age UK, said: “People often think if you have some savings or a small pension there’s no point applying for Pension Credit, but that’s often not the case.

“Don’t be put off by the forms — Age UK can help.”

How do I claim pension credit

PENSION Credit is a weekly payment from the Government to those over the state pension age who have an income which is below a certain level.

If your claim is successful then the benefit will top up your income to £218 a week if you are single, or £11,343.80 a year.

Meanwhile, if you live as a couple, your combined income will be boosted to £332.95 a week, or £17,313.40 annually.

The money you receive in Pension Credit can be spent as you want, but it could be used to pay for food, fuel, energy or housing costs.

Retirees who receive Pension Credit are also entitled to the Winter Fuel Payment, which is worth up to £300 and is designed to help you pay your heating bill over the chillier months ahead.

To qualify, you must have been eligible for Pension Credit during the “qualifying week”, which was September 16-22.

But Pension Credit can be backdated by up to three months, which means the last date you can make a claim and still get the Winter Fuel Payment is December 21.

There are several ways to apply for Pension Credit, including making your claim online or by telephone.

To register for the payments you will need to be receiving the state pension. See gov.uk for more information.

You can also call the Pension Credit claim line on 0800 99 1234 and they can help you to fill in an application form over the phone.

The lines are open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.

Before you call, it would be helpful to have your National Insurance number and bank account details, plus information about your pension, income and savings to hand.

To contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre call 0800 731 0160. Phone lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

You can also send a letter by post to: Winter Fuel Payment Centre, Mail Handling Site A, Wolverhampton, WV98 1LR.

When you contact the centre you will need to tell them personal information including your name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number.

What other help is there?

IF you are not eligible for Pension Credit but need help to make ends meet this winter, then there are still things you can do to save money.

You could save £162 a year by switching your gas and electricity supplier.

Around 28million homes have seen energy costs rise due to the new price cap.

On Tuesday it rose from £1,568 to £1,717 a year, which means bills are up ten per cent, or £149 a year.

This cap sets a maximum rate per unit that customers can be charged for their energy use and changes every three months.

The price cap only affects customers who are on a standard variable energy tariff, which rises or falls depending on the cost of raw energy.

Meanwhile, those who are on a fixed tariff agree in advance how much they will pay for their energy use for a whole year at a time.

A handful of suppliers are currently offering deals that are cheaper than the price cap. The current cheapest is from Outfox The Market and costs £162 less than this month’s cap.

You can reduce the amount of energy you use by lowering your thermostat, draught-proofing doors and windows and taking shorter showers to bring down your monthly costs.

Meanwhile, energy firms including EDF, British Gas and Ovo are offering customers up to £150 free to help with their bills this winter.

The help is provided through the Government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme.

To be eligible, you need to be claiming certain benefits which include Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits.

You do not need to apply for the cash and should receive it automatically.

Our panel of experts will be on hand to suggest other ways to save money, depending on your circumstances.
