Alton Meiring dead at 48: Former South Africa footballer ‘stabbed to death’ as club pay heartbreaking tribute

FORMER footballer Alton Meiring has passed away aged 48.

Reports in South Africa state the ex-striker was stabbed to death.

After hanging up his boots in 2012, Meiring worked as a coach at amateur side Luso Africa FC.

The club confirmed the sad news in a statement that read: “It is with a heavy heart that we confirm the passing of coach Alton Meiring.

“He has been a great supporter of the club and has helped out multiple teams over the last few seasons, from juniors to seniors and even our ladies’ team.”

Tributes from fans also flooded in, with one saying: “Rest in peace Alton.”

He won two international caps for South Africa in 2006.

Meiring played for the likes of Cape Town Spurs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Manning Rangers and Golden Arrows during his career.

He scored for seven different clubs in the South African top-flight.

Europe’s far-right surges AGAIN after big gains in France & Germany as party founded by Nazi SS officer wins in Austria

ANOTHER far-right party has secured a major election victory in a blow to the EU as the surge of hard-right in Europe continues.

Austria’s Freedom Party scored a landmark win in Sunday’s elections with 29.2 per cent of the vote.

The hard-right party, with deep Nazi roots, called for tougher immigration policies and cutting the aid to Ukraine, in their election program, branded Fortress Austria.

The FPO’s leader Herbert Kickl who campaigned using the “people’s chancellor” moniker once used to describe Hitler, said he was ready to form a government with “each and every one” of the parties in parliament.

It is the first time the FPO, founded by former Nazi SS officer Anton Reinthaller won the majority in a national election.

The breakthrough follows an alarmingly increasing number of wins of the far-right in Europe – especially in France and Germany.

The surge of the right-wing parties in Europe began last September with the win of pro-Putin Robert Fico in Slovakia.

His party Smer won 22.95 percent of the vote and 42 seats – after the Slovak leader vowed to end military support for Ukraine.

Two months later, another worrying win followed – the one of controversial politician Geert Wilders dubbed “Europe’s Most Dangerous Man.”

The far-right leader has been vocal about his anti-Islam views and has even compared the Quran to Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

Anti-EU Wilders and a staunch advocate for “Nexit” – the Netherlands leaving the EU – Wilders secured 37 seats in last year’s election.

This summer French President Emmanuel Macron was forced to call for a snap French election after suffering a heavy defeat to Marine Le Pen’s far-right party.

Marine Le Pen‘s National Rally gained 31.5 per cent of the popular vote – double that of Macron’s Renaissance coalition.

Le Pen said the French people “sent a very clear message” and added: “We are ready to take power if the French show trust in us.”

Rassemblement National won the most votes in the first round in July but was later blocked by an informal alliance.

Meanwhile, earlier this month in Germany, a far-right party won a regional election – for the first time since the rise of the Nazis.

The Alternative for Deutschland won the majority of votes in Thuringia the first win for the far-right in a regional election since WW2.

The party’s regional leader Bjorn Hocke has been found guilty of using banned Nazi slogans twice.

Hocke used a SA stormtrooper phrase in a campaign speech last December after using the same slogan in 2021.

He was fined twice totalling 30,000 Euros for the usage.

And in Belgium, the right-wing nationalist New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) retained its first spot, with an expected 22 per cent of the votes.

Its leader Bart De Wever is currently in talks to form a Belgian coalition government.

In Italy, Giorgia Meloni‘s party won more than 28 per cent of the national vote for the EU assembly, which would make it a key player in forming future alliances.

And in Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s far-right Fidesz party took 44 per cent.

The PM, who is pals with war-hungry Putin, blocked a £42million aid package for Ukraine from the EU in December 2023.

The pattern could easily continue into the following year as billionaire Andrej Babiš is looking to make a comeback in power in the Czech Republic in next year’s elections.

The businessman dubbed the “Czech Donald Trump” has repeatedly questioned the EU’s support to Ukraine.

French voters also return to the polls next year while the AfD will attempt to convert its regional successes into national gains next year.

League One Birmingham ready to battle Liverpool and Man Utd for England wonderkid and could spend nearly £10MILLION

The 17-year-old signed his first pro contract with Sunderland over the summer[/caption]

Rigg impressed for England under-18s over the summer following his breakthrough campaign.

He made 21 appearances last term and has been with the Black Cats since he was at primary school.

Rigg became the second youngest player in the club’s history after making his debut against Shrewsbury in a cup tie last January.

His strong performances to start the season have caught the eye of ambitious Birmingham, as well as Premier League scouts.

Liverpool and Man Utd are reportedly interested in securing his signature in January.

SunSport’s Alan Nixon has revealed Birmingham are preparing to table a £10million offer and go toe-to-toe with the big guns.

Rigg is under contract at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2027.

After signing the new deal, he beamed: “I want to develop as a player and improve as a person.

“And I believe this is the best place for me to do that.”

Birmingham are backed by ambitious US chairman Tom Wagner, with NFL legend Tom Brady among his wealthy consortium.

The League One leaders showed off their financial clout during a summer of stunning squad upheaval at St Andrews.

Striker Jay Stansfield was tempted back to the Midlands from Fulham in a whopping £15million deal.

The 21-year-old had spent last season on loan with Blues, scoring 12 goals in the Championship.

Last season’s League One top scorer Alfie May was also added to the ranks, along with 16 other new faces.

Wagner told The Telegraph: “We’re working within the framework of League One rules, but also the Championship because of the three-year lookback.

“We expect to go back up, that’s clearly our ambition given that objective we need to look at the three-year rules in the Championship and make sure that in our forecasts every one of those years allows us to maintain proper P & S compliance.”

New holiday warning introduced by Foreign Office for three winter sun hotspots loved by Brits

NEW holiday advice has been issued for Brits heading to a number of winter sun hotspots.

The UK Foreign Office has updated the travel advice for destinations such as Egypt and Morocco.

Morocco and Egypt also have new advice in regards to Lebanon[/caption]

Updated on September 29, more than 17 countries have a new warning in place following Israel’s bombing of Lebanon.

The current travel advice states: “Ongoing hostilities between Israel and Lebanon could escalate quickly and pose risks for the wider region.

“Monitor this travel advice and other media as the situation is changing fast.”

Lebanon currently borders Syria and Israel, although is also near to Cyprus and Egypt.

Along with Egypt and Morocco, the travel advice is also in place for the UAE, where Brits often visit to holiday in Dubai.

Other destinations include Tunisia, Jordan, Oman and Qatar.

Both Egypt and Morocco are popular destinations with Brits seeking some warmer weather in winter.

Egypt’s Hurghada often has affordable deals in November and December as well as temperatures over 25C.

Morocco is also one of the cheapest places in Africa to visit, while Dubai is one of the hotter destinations to visit to escape the UK’s cold.

The Foreign Office does not currently advise against travel to these countries, apart from a few small areas including the borders.

Brits should still check the travel advice before they visit any of the countries with the warning in place.

If the advice updates to advising against all travel, tour operators will issue full refunds for anyone with holidays booked.

If you cancel a trip yourself without a travel warning in place, you are unlikely to get any money back.

Here’s everything you need to know about travelling to Cyprus as well, regarding the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

Airlines have already been forced to divert their routes to avoid flying over the Middle East.

Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are now flying over Egypt to avoid flying over Israel.

This means flights to Asia and Australia are now taking longer.

Flight compensation rules

A look at your rights if a flight is delayed or cancelled, when your entitled to compensation and if your travel insurance can cover the costs.

What are my rights if my flight is cancelled or delayed?

Under UK law, airlines have to provide compensation if your flight arrives at its destination more than three hours late.

If you’re flying to or from the UK, your airline must let you choose a refund or an alternative flight.

You will be able to get your money back for the part of your ticket that you haven’t used yet.

So if you booked a return flight and the outbound leg is cancelled, you can get the full cost of the return ticket refunded.

But if travelling is essential, then your airline has to find you an alternative flight. This could even be with another airline.

When am I not entitled to compensation?

The airline doesn’t have to give you a refund if the flight was cancelled due to reasons beyond their control, such as extreme weather.

Disruptions caused by things like extreme weather, airport or air traffic control employee strikes or other ‘extraordinary circumstances’ are not eligible for compensation.

Some airlines may stretch the definition of “extraordinary circumstances” but you can challenge them through the aviation regulator the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Will my insurance cover me if my flight is cancelled?

If you can’t claim compensation directly through the airline, your travel insurance may refund you.

Policies vary so you should check the small print, but a delay of eight to 12 hours will normally mean you qualify for some money from your insurer.

Remember to get written confirmation of your delay from the airport as your insurer will need proof.

If your flight is cancelled entirely, you’re unlikely to be covered by your insurance.

And Qantas has been forced to suspend its Perth-London direct route – one of the longest in the world – due to the situation in the Middle Wast.

Passengers now have to change at Changi Airport in Singapore.

Incurable Ebola-like ‘eye-bleeding disease’ with mortality rate of 90% kills 6 – sparking new ‘pandemic fears’

SIX people have died in a major outbreak of Marburg disease in Africa – an Ebola-like bug that kills up to 90 per cent of those it infects.

At least 26 cases have been reported since the outbreak was first confirmed in Rwanda on Friday, the health minister has announced.

Travel could see Marburg spread internationally, experts fear
The WHO's nine priority diseases that pose the biggest risk to public health (plus Disease X)

It’s the first time the disease, which causes uncontrolled bleeding from different body parts including the eyes, has been reported in the East African country.

While the source of the outbreak is not known, cases have been spotted in six of the country’s 30 districts, suggesting it may be widespread.

The majority of cases so far recorded have been reported by healthcare staff in and around the country’s capital Kigali.

The city is home to 1.2million people and has a well-connected airport, raising fears of international spread.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says it is deploying experts and outbreak response tools to Rwanda to help curb the virus.

Hospital patient visits have been banned for two weeks and funeral services have been restricted.

Emergency medical supplies are expected to land in Kigali in the coming days.

The agency is also coordinating efforts to reinforce cross-border measures in Rwanda’s neighbouring countries to stop further spread.

Marburg is already on the WHO’s official watchlist of ‘priority pathogens‘ that could trigger the next pandemic.

The virus spreads to people from fruit bats and spreads among humans through direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood, saliva, and mucus.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, muscle pains, diarrhoea, and vomiting.

In severe cases, death occurs from extreme blood loss.

There are no approved treatments, but a range of vaccines are currently in development.

What is Marburg virus?

Marburg is a filovirus like its more famous cousin, Ebola.

These are part of a broader group of viruses that can cause viral haemorrhagic fever, a syndrome of fever and bleeding.

The first outbreaks occurred in 1967 in lab workers in Germany and Yugoslavia who were working with African green monkeys imported from Uganda.

The virus was identified in a lab in Marburg, Germany.

Since then, outbreaks have occurred in a handful of countries in Africa, less frequently than Ebola.

Marburg’s natural host is a fruit bat, but it can also infect primates, pigs and other animals.

Human outbreaks start after a person has contact with an infected animal.

It’s spread between people mainly through direct contact, especially with bodily fluids, and it causes an illness like Ebola, with fever, headache and malaise, followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, and aches and pains.

The bleeding follows about five days later, and it can be fatal in up to 90 per cent of people infected.

Rwandan authorities have urged the public to stay vigilant, wash their hands with clean water and soap, and report all suspected cases.

Last year, an epidemic outbreak of Marburg virus broke out in Equatorial Guinea, Central Africa for the first time.

At least 16 people cases were detected, and nine people died.

THE world of country music is mourning the loss of Kris Kristofferson.

The singer and Hollywood star sadly passed away aged 88, leaving behind his wife Lisa Meyers.

During his life, legendary country music star Kris Kristofferson was married three times.

The singer’s longest marriage was to Lisa Meyers who was by his side when he sadly passed away at their home in Maui, Hawaii on September 28, 2024.

Along with the rest of his family, she released this statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28 at home.

“We’re all so blessed for our time with him.

“Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”

Kris and Lisa’s story begins

After divorcing second wife and singer Rita Coolidge, Kris met Lisa in 1982 at a Malibu gym.

They crossed paths when he asked to borrow a piece of gym equipment that she was using.

In a later interview with The Irish Independent, Kris revealed how he used this as “ploy” to talk to her.

At the time their romance started, Lisa was a law student studying at Pepperdine University – a college two of her children would later attend.

Wedded bliss

After a year of dating, Kris and Lisa got married in Malibu.

The pair wed on February 18, 1983, in an intimate ceremony at the Pepperdine University chapel.

After marrying, the couple went onto have a huge brood of kids.

Major coffee chain with over 16,000 branches abruptly closes another store in US city – but mystery surrounds shutdown

A STARBUCKS store in Seattle is set to close – just weeks after branches in the US city slammed shut.

The reasons behind the shutdown remain unknown, leaving customers in the dark.

This Starbucks store in Seattle, Washington, will close today (September 30)[/caption]

A note posted on one of the windows informed coffee fanatics that the store would be shutting up shop, as reported by the ABC affiliate KOMO-TV.

“We would like to thank you for being part of our store community,” it said.

“You are the heart of who were are at Starbucks.

“It has been a great pleasure to connect with you every day. We are very thankful to have played a role in your daily routine and that you have shared these moments of your life with us.”

The note invited coffee lovers to visit other Starbucks outlets in the city.

Starbucks chiefs told KOMO they are constantly reviewing their store portfolios.

They said they don’t take decisions to shutter outlets lightly.

The U.S. Sun has approached Starbucks for comment.

The closure comes just weeks after a Starbucks store in Aliki Beach – around seven miles away – shuttered in August.

The decision was taken to close the outlet – despite opposition from locals.

A petition was even created in a desperate bid to convince chiefs to reconsider their decision, per KOMO.

“It provides a space for friends to meet, families to connect, and neighbors to come together,” the petition said.

Those who wanted the coffeehouse to remain open said it boosted the local economy and was extremely convenient.

Supporters also pointed out that the shutdown “disrupted” employees’ work routine – even though they were able to move to other locations.

A Starbucks location near Pike Place Market in Seattle also closed down recently.

Starbucks has more than 16,000 locations in the US and is a popular go-to spot for workers on their morning commute.

The U.S. Sun reported how the chain’s iconic location in Astor Place, New York, closed after 30 years of business.

Starbucks bosses didn’t delve into the reason behind the closure but crime has been speculated as one of the factors.

A Starbucks kiosk at the Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall, Pennsylvania, 65 miles north of Philadelphia, in August.

The global coffee chain is not the only company that has seen store closures.

OTHER CLOSURES

The U.S. Sun reported how a raft of Shari’s Café and Pies establishments have closed in recent months.

The latest closure was the chain’s restaurant in Keizer, Oregon – around 45 miles from Portland.

Bosses decided to shut up shop after almost 30 years of business.

Other chains that have seen closures include Red Lobster, Applebee’s, and Cracker Barrel.

Red Lobster’s future appeared to be hanging by a thread as chiefs filed for bankruptcy.

Dozens of restaurants disappeared from the map but the company now has a new CEO, Damola Adamolekun.

He believes the company is now more resilient.
