Arthur Poeckes

Arthur Poeckes, 93, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars following a brief illness.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at All Saints Catholic Parish – St. Joseph Church in Le Mars. Father Doug Klein celebrated Mass. Burial with military honors provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen was at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.  Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars. Arthur John Poeckes, the son of Eugene Sr and Myra (Pick) Poeckes, was born on February 14, 1931, in Le Mars, Iowa. He attended school in Remsen and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1949. 

During the Korean War, he enlisted in the United States Army in September of 1952. He was honorably discharged in October of 1954.

He was united in marriage to Peggy Barthole on September 1, 1956 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Kingsley.  They lived for a short time in Remsen before moving to Pierson, Iowa.  In 1968, they purchased a farm northeast of Kingsley where they dairy farmed and crop farmed until their retirement.  In 1998, they moved to Le Mars, Iowa.

He was a member of All Saints Catholic Parish in Le Mars. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters. Following his military service, he became a member of the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 in Le Mars and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 in Remsen. He loved fishing, traveling, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his 3 sons: Brad Poeckes of Omaha, NE, James Poeckes of Le Mars, IA, and Tom (Shelly) Poeckes of Le Mars, IA; 8 grandchildren: Hannah Poeckes, Claire Poeckes, Laura Poeckes, Mary Grace Poeckes, Mark Poeckes, Brian Hemmelman, Kayla (Martin) Lammers, and Dylan Poeckes; 3 great grandchildren; his brother, Dennis (Kathy) Poeckes of Remsen, IA; his in laws, Sharon Poeckes of Remsen, IA, Sharon Poeckes of Remsen, IA, and Pam Poeckes of Remsen, IA; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Peggy Poeckes; his daughter, Diane Hemmelman; and his siblings: Eugene Poeckes Jr, Geraldine (Jack) Hilton, Jeanette (Bob) Harpenau, Roger Poeckes, Paul Poeckes, and Mark Poeckes.
