The life saga of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam is of struggles, inspirations, and high ideals. Born on 15th October 1931 in a small Tamil Nadu village called Rameswaram, Kalam grew up in a simple family where resources were scarce but the flights of dreams were endless. From selling newspapers as a child to eventually becoming a missile man, his journey was an inspiration for the world.
It was one of the biggest dreams for Dr. Kalam to be a fighter pilot. He faced extremely tough exams but missed the opportunity just by one place only. Most people at this stage would have dropped it, but Kalam took this as a new beginning. He couldn’t become a fighter pilot, so he chose to be an aerospace engineer, especially with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
Due to Kalam’s love and dedication to science, he was leading missile development programs. Missiles like Agni and Prithvi were prepared under his leadership. This very decisive step towards becoming a nuclear power was taken in 1998 when India conducted the Pokhran-2 nuclear tests successfully. The world hailed Kalam as Missile Man for this achievement.
Dr. Kalam’s life was a symbol of simplicity. With high posts and fame, he always remained to be a teacher. For him, sharing his ideas with students and motivating them mattered the most. He always used to say that “Dreams are not what we see while sleeping, dreams are those that do not let us sleep.”
He died of a heart attack on 27 July 2015 while interacting with students in Shillong. Inspiring the youth till his last moment, his thoughts, lifestyle, and vision still inspire the youth to fulfill their dream.
