Alaqua Animal Refuge, a leading no-kill shelter in the Southeast, is calling on the community for urgent support as it continues to provide life-saving care for animals displaced by Hurricane Milton. While national organizations have offered emergency grants and supplies, the refuge remains critically in need of donations, volunteers, foster homes, and adopters.

As the designated emergency shelter for animals affected by Hurricane Milton, Alaqua mobilized quickly, sourcing essential supplies across a three-hour radius to ensure the incoming animals received immediate care. However, the high number of displaced animals, many in serious condition, has placed an intense strain on the refuge’s resources.

Currently housing animals in two emergency arenas, Alaqua is treating numerous cases of heartworm disease, malnutrition, untreated injuries, broken bones, and behavioral trauma related to the storm. Laurie Hood, Alaqua’s Founder and CEO, expressed gratitude for the national and local support they’ve received but emphasized the continued need for local community involvement.

“The animals need long-term care, and for that, we need monetary donations, more volunteers, foster homes, and adopters willing to take in these special animals,” said Hood. She also encouraged supporters to donate via the refuge’s website and to spread the word through social media.

Alaqua is currently offering multiple ways for supporters to contribute: monetary donations for medical treatments and operational costs, volunteering for daily animal care, fostering to alleviate overcrowding, and adoption.
