Deputies: Fmr. Upstate youth pastor faces over 100 charges after secretly recording girls, women

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) – A former youth pastor who allegedly secretly recorded young girls and women is now facing over 100 charges in the Upstate.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday that investigators have charged 36-year-old Daniel Kellan Mayfield, of Boiling Springs, with 38 counts of voyeurism for 24 victims.

An investigation was initiated in May 2023 where Mayfield was first arrested by the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said the suspect admitted to standing outside the window of a home and taking a video of a woman while she showered.

Further into the investigation, Mayfield was accused of recording multiple girls, as young as 14- years old, in the bathroom of First Baptist Gowensville on Highway 14 near Landrum between 2017 and 2023.

Officials from the church said Mayfield worked there for seven years as the youth pastor. He was terminated from his position on the day of his arrest.

The investigation also led to the involvement of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office after deputies examined multiple electronic devices that were seized from Mayfield. According to those arrest warrants, Mayfield set up cameras to record brides and their bridal parties changing between April and September 2021.

Officials also identified locations in Spartanburg County where Mayfield had committed the same offenses. Deputies said the majority of the incidents occurred at wedding venues where Mayfield was the contracted photographer/videographer.

Deputies said investigators received evidence from Greenville County and were able to identify, notify and interview the victims.

Mayfield was transported from Greenville County to Spartanburg County where he awaits a bond hearing at 2 p.m.

Following the hearing, Mayfield will be transported back to Greenville County where he is expected to appear in another hearing Thursday due to pending charges for similar offenses in Beaufort County and Mount Pleasant.

The SC Attorney General’s Office will be handling Mayfield’s prosecution.
