We went to Costco for the very first time and stayed under budget – but the ‘Home Depot’ similarity confused us

TWO content creators went to Costco for the very first time and were both left totally stunned.

Alex Sparrow and Carter Michael took a trip to the big-box store, eager to check out the mega groceries.

But the influencers were not only gobsmacked by the size of the store, but also the huge items on the shelves too, to which they described as ‘on steroids’.

The guys took to social media to document their shopping spree, confirming that they surprisingly managed to stay under budget.

Posting on TikTok, in a clip captioned ‘Well that was something!’, Carter held up his Costco card and wrote: ‘Shopping at Costco for the first time ever.’

Stunned at the size of the store, Alex beamed: “This place is so big…we could live here”, to which Carter chimed in: “I didn’t know they had TVs and stuff here – it’s like everything is on steroids.”

Eagle-eyed Alex, a fitness, fashion and music enthusiast then noticed a strikingly similarity to Home Depot that left the pair baffled.

Unlike regular shopping carts, Alex was stunned by the orange carts, as he beamed: “People walking around with Home Depot carts here.”

Whilst Carter was impressed with the baked goods, in particular the $10.99 snack selections, Alex was more interested in the huge bags of Mexican-style cheese blends.

But the pair were held up by the masses of “clogged up” shoppers, as Carter admitted: “I feel like I’m driving on the highway.”

The duo were shocked at the “intense” samples and stocked up on protein yoghurts, eggs and more.

The pair were also keen to keep the costs low, as Alex held up his receipt and confessed: “The goal is to keep it under $300 and we spent $229.”

Reflecting on the trip as they pushed the cart to their car, Carter claimed: “Costco is stressful. Stressful.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @itscarterandalex, has clearly left many open-mouthed as it has quickly racked up over 4,200 likes.

Costco’s membership scanners

Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances.

In August 2024, the retailer released a statement about the scanners on its website.

“Over the coming months, membership scanning devices will be used at the entrance door of your local warehouse,” it wrote.

“Once deployed, prior to entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code against the scanner.

“Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member for entry.

“If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!

“If your membership is inactive, expired, or you would like to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask that you stop by the membership counter prior to entering the warehouse to shop.

“Additionally, if your membership card does not have a photo, please be prepared to show your valid photo ID.

“We encourage you to stop by the membership counter to have a photo taken to have on your card.”

But social media users were left divided by Costco – whilst some claimed they are ‘obsessed’ with the chain, others agreed that visiting is ‘stressful’.

One person said: “Obsessed with Costco!!”

A third commented: “Love love love Costco.”

Meanwhile, someone else admitted: “You’re right, Costco is stressful.”

A second claimed:“Costco is waaayyyy stressful”

Whilst another foodie wrote: “People stress me out at Costco, they don’t move out of my way.”
