Newsom, Bass announce more than $800M in homelessness funding

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Tuesday jointly announced additional funding to combat homelessness.

The $827 million in state funding will better connect people experiencing homelessness to shelters and services, the officials said.

That money will go to 37 regional grantees that represent 100 local communities and organizations across the state, Newsom’s office said in a news release.

“The funding comes with strong accountability measures and reporting requirements to ensure funding is used effectively and outcomes can be tracked and measured,” the release added.

Bass’ office offered details as to how much each local area will receive:

  • Los Angeles: $380.36 million
  • Riverside: $21.35 million
  • San Bernardino: $11.82 million

In a Tuesday morning press conference, Newsom pointed out that this kind of state and local partnership to combat homelessness wasn’t available when he served as mayor of San Francisco.

“The state has stepped up in ways the state has never stepped up in the past,” Newsom said.

Bass said the additional funding is indicative of the work officials have been doing over the past few years to combat the homelessness crisis.

“[We’re] bringing every level of government together,” she said.
