What local questions are on the ballot in the Upstate

(WSPA) – Depending on where you live you may have a local question on your ballot for the general election.

There are four county-wide questions, three of which involve new one percent sales taxes.

Several fire districts are also asking voters to approve a new millage rate or bond issuances.

Here’s a look at all of the local questions on Upstate ballots for the 2024 general election:

Anderson County

Voters in Anderson County will decide whether to impose a one person sales and use tax for seven years.

If voters approve question one, a tax would go into effect to pay for improvements to roads, highways, bridges, and drainage throughout the county.

It is estimated that the tax would bring in $366 million.

A second question will ask for approval to issue $15 million in bonds to fund a portion of the same road projects. That bond will be paid for by the tax revenue from question one.

Roads set to be improved by the tax were laid out in a road study in August.

Greenville County

Similarly to Anderson County, citizens in Greenville County will also vote to implement a one percent sales and use tax for the purpose of road improvements.

That eight-year tax would bring in just over $1 billion including $474 million for road improvement, paving, and reconstruction projects, $216 million for intersection improvements, $313 million for roadway safety and congestion relief, and $43 million for bridge and drainage projects.

The ballot question also lists many of the projects expected to get funding from the tax.

Greenwood County

Voters in Greenwood County will vote on a one percent sales tax for numerous projects around the county.

Projects include a new career center at Piedmont Technical College, a new public safety training center, and other upgrades and improvements to municipal facilities around Greenwood County.

The tax would also fund road, bridge, and utility improvements.

Laurens County

Gray Court residents will vote on whether to transfer the town’s water system to the Laurens County Water and Sewer Commission.

Spartanburg County

Residents in the Cherokee Springs Fire District will vote to approve a tax rate of up to 35.2 mills.

Hilltop Area Fire District residents will vote to approve a tax rate of up to 55 mills. Voters will also be able to approve the issuance of $2.5 million in bonds for facilities improvements.

In New Prospect Area Fire District, a referendum will ask voters to approve a tax rate of up to 20 mills.

Westview-Fairforest Fire District residents will be asked to approve a tax rate of up to 36 mills.

Union County

Union County residents will vote on whether to allow temporary permits allowing the sale of alcohol on any day of the week, including Sundays.

The temporary permits would only be valid for up to 24 hours to allow the possession, sale, and consumption of alcohol by the drink at off-premises locations.

Residents in the Santuc Fire District are being asked to authorize up to $500,000 in bonds to help pay for upgrades and equipment.
