Bhai Dooj also called Yam Dwitiya is an Indian festival which is symbolic of brother-sisterly love and affection. It is a festival that follows the culmination of five-day celebrations of Diwali. Sisters wish on this day for their brother’s healthy and long life. The importance of Bhai Dooj is almost the same as Rakshabandhan, but here sisters apply tilak to their brother and feed him sweets, do not tie rakhi. Innumerable mythological stories are associated with it which give more religious importance to this festival.
According to scriptures, Yamraj went to his sister Yamunaji’s house on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya Tithi. Pleased with his sister’s hospitality, he gave her a boon that the brother who worships Yam with his sister on this day and takes a bath in Yamuna will not have to go to Yamlok after death. For this reason, the tradition of celebrating the festival of Bhai Dooj is going on. Another legend states that Lord Krishna killed Narakasura and returned to Dwarka. His sister Subhadra received him with open arms, applied tilak on his forehead, and wished that he lived for a long time. From then on, sisters started applying tilak on the foreheads of their brothers on the day of Bhai Dooj.
Bhai Dooj will on November 3, this year. As per Vedic calendar Dwitiya Tithi will commence at 8: 22 pm on 2 November and remain till 10:06 pm 03 November. So, accordingly Udayatithi, Bhai Dooj will be performed on November 3rd. This day the Subh hours during which tilak can be applied is between 01:10 pm and 15:22 pm. These can apply tilak on brother’s forehead and pray to get a long life until the end of this duration.
Preparations before the application of tilak are done early in the morning of Bhai Dooj. Sisters kept some fruits, flowers, kumkum, sweets, and rice in a thali and sandalwood separately. At the propitious time, a stool is placed for the brother, and a tilak with sandalwood or kumkum is applied to his forehead; rice grains are sprinkled over it, and the brother is fed sweets. The sisters then perform aarti for their brother and present him with a coconut. The festival of Bhai Dooj further strengthens the relationship between brother and sister.
This festival is known by different names in different states. In Maharashtra and Goa, it is referred to as “Bhau Beej”, and in West Bengal, as “Bhai Fonta”. The basic purpose of the festival is the same everywhere: to further strengthen the bond of love and protection between brother and sister.
This festival represents the love of brothers and sisters but also gives significance to the unity of the family. This festival has become even more vital in such a busy life of now, and brothers and sisters get a chance to spend time together and share their feelings with each other. Religiously, it is important, but socially, too, as it improves family unity and follows up with the traditions.
