Diwali is also known as Deepawali. It is the largest and most significant festival of India. The very purpose of this sacred festival is to depict the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness. This festival is considered very propitious in Hinduism and is observed on the new moon day of Kartik month. On this festival, houses are decorated with diyas, colorful lights, and rangolis, and Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped ritually so that the family remains blessed with happiness and prosperity.
Diwali is also related to the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. This is according to the legend; Lord Rama, Mata Sita, and Lakshman defeated Ravana and went back to Ayodhya. The people of Ayodhya, with respect and honor for their princes, lit the whole city with diyas, or earthen lamps, for them. That’s how this festival comes into the books as ‘Festival of Lights.’ Every year, it’s celebrated with great joy and devotion and infuses the good qualities of harmony and prosperity into the lives of people.
Dhanteras to Bhai Dooj: A five-day festival
Diwali is a five-day festival, which begins with Dhanteras and concludes with Bhai Dooj. Each day is a special religious and cultural celebration.
Dhanteras: This day welcomes Lord Kubera and Goddess Lakshmi. On this day, new utensils, jewellery, and vehicles are bought, symbolizing prosperity.
Narak Chaturdashi (Kali Chaudas): Otherwise known as Chhoti Diwali, houses are cleaned, decorated with diyas, and a new change of clothing for everyone is worn on the day of Narak Chaturdashi because this is supposed to be a day that evil spirits would be wiped out of lives.
Deepawali: The diya has set up this main Deepawali night in which both Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha were worshipped. The occasion is offered special prayers and is carried out by wishing for a life free from unhappiness, war, or poverty and full of love.
Govardhan Puja: They provide this to Lord Krishna and thank Him.
Bhai Dooj: Sisters pray to God on this day that their brothers may live longer and that they may acquire prosperity.
The auspicious time for Diwali puja is on Amavasya date in Kartik month, starting from 3:52 pm on October 31 and ending till 6:16 pm on November 1. The good time for Lakshmi Puja is between 5:12 pm and 6:16 pm. The house is also cleaned and decorated for puja as Goddess Lakshmi resides in clean places.
Deepawali is the symbol of goodness and light. This festival tells us that however dark the darkness may be, light prevails ultimately. Inspired from the life of Lord Rama, this festival provides a message not only in the religious but also of morality and sociality.
Not is Diwali only an occasion for the religion that worships but a marvellous medium of love to be in contact with family and society. A day wherein people come nearer to each other, their hearts fill with sweetness distributing sweet dishes among them teaching us that we must free ourselves from ignorance and invite the rays of knowledge for living together in love with full harmony.
