JUST IN: Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag – all the details

Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag a day after the club’s 2-1 loss to West Ham.

Two seasons later and the 54-year-old manager has been shown the door after replacing Ralf Rangnick before the 2022/23 season – many didn’t think he’d make it this far.

In fact, he would have been told to leave months earlier if he hadn’t guided his side to FA Cup victory in May this year.

The Dutchman led Manchester United out eighty-five times, winning on forty-four occasions, bringing home two league cups during his tenure.

This concludes what was a messy relationship between the manager, club and fans; he seemed to have all the tools, signings and staff one could dream of but was never able to win on a consistent basis.

For Manchester United, losing to West Ham, which was fittingly dubbed as the ‘El Sackico’, was the last straw in the hat, dropping them down to fourteenth place, twelve points off the top.

They also need help in the Europa League, where they sit in 21st position (out of 36 teams).

One Dutchman out, another in

Club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who recently joined ten Hag’s backroom as assistant manager, will be the interim manager until further notice; however, if he manages to turn it around, the job could be his.

Manchester United’s statement

Manchester United confirmed the news on their website:

“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

“Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.
