Costco tells shoppers to check freezers for ‘deadly’ breakfast item just days after telling them to return 5 other items

COSTCO has urged shoppers to check their freezers for a “deadly” breakfast item just days after telling them to return another five products.

The latest recall comes amid listeria infection concerns – a bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women, anyone over 65 and those with weakened immunity.

The Krusteaz Belgian Waffles have been recalled amid listeria infection concerns

TreeHouse Foods, the manufacturer behind Krusteaz Belgian Waffles, announced an expanded voluntary recall of all products made at a specific facility and “still within their shelf-life.”

The recalled product, Krusteaz Belgian Waffles 24ct, was sold at Costco between October 13, 2023 and October 21, 2024.

The company also extended the recall to products distributed through several other retailers apart from Costco.

TreeHouse Foods warned of the severe health risks associated with listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria behind the contamination.

The organism poses a serious threat, particularly to young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems.

Healthy individuals may experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea.

For pregnant women, listeria infection can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

Around 1,600 people in the US every year contract the disease, and it kills around 260 Americans.

The recalled products were distributed across the US and Canada “in various formats”, but the food company said “there have been no confirmed reports of illness linked the the recalled products.”

If you purchased a recalled product, it can be identified by the UPC on the back of the carton, the lot code, and the best-by date.

TreeHouse Foods advised shoppers to either dispose of the recalled items or return them to the store of purchase for a credit.

Costco usually contacts customers who have purchased a recalled product, and the retailer also has a website dedicated to product recalls.

Customers who suspect they have these products are encouraged to check the online resources and follow the instructions for returns and refunds.

Freeze-dried meat sold at Costco is also under recall amid listeria concerns.

Shoppers must return the Nutristore Freeze Dried Deluxe Meat Variety #10 Cans, 12 count “due to the potential of Listeria contamination in chicken provided by one of our suppliers,” the company said in a notice.

Those who purchased cans of chicken remaining are instructed not to eat them, but rather return them for full refunds.

It comes just days after Costco shoppers were urged to return a raft of products over concerns that some items had been contaminated with listeria.

Among the items recalled include an emergency protein bucket, chicken and cheese taquitos, and a chicken truffle carbonara.

Shoppers who bought the Readywise emergency protein bucket were told not to eat it, per a warning issued by the company.

The bucket contained 110 servings.

Jim Martin, the company CEO, ordered shoppers to return the item to their local warehouse, according to a letter seen by The U.S. Sun.

“Food safety, quality, and customer satisfaction are priorities within the Readywise organization,” he said.

Costco chiefs issued recalls for a chicken truffle carbonara meal kit and told shoppers not to eat it.

Customers were also ordered to return a tagliatelle dish containing chicken and portobello mushroom sauce.

The manufacturer of the ready meals, Rana Meal Solutions, apologized for the inconvenience caused.
