Ex-deputy govs demand stiffer penalties for projects completion defaulters

The Forum of Former Deputy Governors of Nigeria (FFDGN) has urged the federal government to enact laws that will compel successive governments at both state and federal levels to complete subsisting projects before embarking on new ones to fast track socio-economic development in the country.

The forum, in a 16-point communique co-signed by the national chairman, Chris Akomas and deputy national chairmen South and West, Hazeem Gbolarumi and Mukhtar Shehu Shagari, deputy national chairman respectively, urged amendment to the Public Procurement Act to mete out stiffer punishment against contract completion defaulters.

The forum while urging governors to ensure a harmonious relationship with their deputies to promote sustainable democratic governance in Nigeria, also commended the federal government’s continuous support to the military and other security agencies.

They said that good governance, as the central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda, is imperative for achieving food security and sustainable growth in Nigeria.

“Governors are encouraged to ensure a harmonious relationship with their deputies to promote sustainable democratic governance in Nigeria. Entrenching good governance is an imperative for achieving food security and sustainable growth in Nigeria as the central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Consultation for economic policies by the IMF and the World Bank should be open and inclusive of all major stakeholders in Nigeria. Every effort should be made to ensure that funds from external borrowings by the federal government and sub-national governments should be judiciously applied to productive activities and public infrastructure development with impact on citizens’ standard of living.”
