This year, the date of Diwali is confusing and due to which people wonder if Diwali will fall on 31 October or 1 November. Traditionally, the festival of Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya in Kartik month. The current this year will start at 3:52 pm on 31 October and will continue up to 6 pm on 1 November. But as Lakshmi Puja in Pradosh Kaal is important, hence, 31 October has been considered astrologically suitable for Diwali. In addition to this, according to some of the prominent Panchangs and scholars, Diwali is also recommended to be performed on 31 October.
The festival of Diwali is celebrated with the joy of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya, which was celebrated by lighting ghee lamps on the night of Amavasya. Dhanteras this year falls on 29 October. Chhoti Diwali will be celebrated on 30 October and Badi Diwali on 31 October. Govardhan Puja will be celebrated on 2 November and Bhai Dooj on 3 November.
Kartik Amavasya will be falling on two different days this year. Says Acharya Durgesh Tare of Ujjain, “As per scriptures, Diwali can be celebrated only in Amavasya Tithi in Pradosh Kaal. Keeping these premises in mind, this 31st October seems to be the day when, according to scriptures, people could celebrate Diwali.”.
Lighting a lamp has religious importance because it can only remove darkness and transmit positive energy. According to Vastu, Lakshmi Puja should be performed by lighting a lamp in the temple of the house and then lamps should be lit in other rooms also. Lighting a lamp in the south-east corner of the kitchen keeps the health of the family members good.
Traders’ associations have also sought that government declare Diwali holiday on 31st October itself. Main business organizations of Delhi also planned the Diwali programmme on 31st October.
