Daycare under closer scrutiny after children exposed to broken glass

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Missouri child protection investigators have issued their report on a childcare facility called Kreatyve Kydz Development Center on West Florissant Avenue. The state investigation began after a video of toddlers surrounded by broken glass was posted to Facebook on Sept. 3.

“Baby, don’t touch that. That’s glass,” you could hear a woman say on the clip.

A toddler’s grandmother posted the video. She asked not to be identified when we interviewed her.

“What if one of these babies had gotten into this glass?” the grandmother said.

FOX 2 interviewed her and a parent, who asked to be called Milly.

“I found out from social media,” Milly said. “No one ever told me anything.”

A representative from the center told us the teachers had been fired and that she’d called state regulators on her own center.

A three-page state report describes building tensions inside between the teachers, leading to that glass bottle shattering on the floor around the toddlers. It says three teachers ended up outside while all the children remained inside.

Inspectors from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Childhood determined five children, ages 17 months to two years old, were unsupervised inside while workers fought outside.

The inspection report says workers had a disagreement about scheduling. And the report confirms three employees were fired.

The director told us she had no comment when we followed up in person. State regulators have now placed Kreatyve Kydz on what’s called “close supervision,” which means increased unannounced inspections.
