The world’s fattest cat has tragically died just weeks after being sent to a pet weight loss camp.

Kroshik, Russian for “Crumbs,” weighed a whopping 38 pounds when rescued from the basement of a hospital, where he was fed cookies and soup by well-meaning staff.

The strict diet and exercise regimen at the cat fat camp where Kroshik was taken was successful and the ginger tabby was finally able to walk again after losing 2.2 pounds.

The brazen Kroshik even tried to escape from the center once, but ended up stuck between the bars of a shoe rack, with an unfortunate photo showing his stomach hits the ground and face is pressed into a plastic surgery lump.

Tragically, the beloved Kroshik passed away suddenly on Saturday evening at the diet center in Perm, Russia.

His caregivers said on Sunday: ‘Yesterday Kroshik suddenly became ill. He started to choke. Until then, doctors had never noticed any signs of shortness of breath in him.

‘We acted immediately; Within half an hour Kroshik was already in the oxygen room.

‘Gradually his condition started to deteriorate. And even the doctors’ resuscitation efforts couldn’t help him. He was not alone in dying. The best doctors fought for his life until his very last breath.’

Vets said the cat had “multiple growths in the spleen and metastases in other internal organs,” but the exact cause of death will only be known later.

Kroshik had become a global celebrity when he underwent a strict diet and exercise routine at the fat loss center.

The caretakers on social media: ‘For a long time we could not understand the reason for such incredible popularity of Kroshik, because we did nothing to somehow attract the media to the story…

‘Later we realized it [that] people from all over the world are so tired of bad news… We rejoiced with you in every victory of Kroshik and cherished every step of him.”

They concluded: ‘Sometimes miracles don’t happen. Sometimes even the strongest cats can’t handle it.’

Korshik lived in the basement of a Perm hospital, where he is believed to have taken up residence after being abandoned by his owners.

After he was rescued, he faced a life of diets and training as vets tried to get him back to a healthier weight of 10 pounds.

Rehabilitation specialist Ekaterina Bedakova said his escape attempt at the fat loss camp was actually a sign that he was slowly improving.

Video footage from the care center showed the clearly fed-up-looking curmudgeon being put to the test on a treadmill.

Using a water tank to reduce his body’s pressure on his leg joints, Crumbs was seen reluctantly jogging around the track.

Other photos showed his stomach shaved to make it easier to dry after practice sessions.

Tabby cats vary in what can be considered a healthy weight.

Experts say that between seven and twelve pounds is a good weight for a cat in general, although there are differences depending on the breed.
