Noughties indie band to REFORM to pay emotional tribute to pop legend Amy Winehouse

SEVENTEEN years ago, the late great Amy Winehouse performed The Zutons’ 2006 song Valerie on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

Not only did Amy’s cover make the track into a smash hit, back in August it was voted the best Live Lounge performance of all time.

And now the British Indie rockers are coming back to pay homage to the star.

The Sun can reveal The Zutons, fronted by Dave McCabe, will return to the Live Lounge on Wednesday to perform Valerie and Amy’s 2006 hit Back To Black in her name.

The band told me: “We were blown away to hear that Amy’s brilliant version of Valerie was voted the number one Live Lounge cover of all time.

“But then she was such an amazing artist with that incredible voice that it shouldn’t really be any surprise at all.

“It’s a real honour and fills us with pride, and the fact we’re going to be on Radio 1 doing a cover of hers is like a full circle moment.

“Hopefully we can do it justice.”

Insiders at Radio 1 revealed they couldn’t believe their luck when The Zutons agreed to the gig and think the session is the perfect way to honour Amy, who passed away in July 2011.

An insider added: “Having The Zutons in to cover Amy’s Back To Black, as well as singing Valerie, feels like a real full circle moment.

“The band last performed in the Live Lounge in 2008 but this feels like a real history-making moment.

“The whole team can’t wait to have them in.”

Amy’s version of Valerie, which appeared on Mark Ronson’s second studio album Version, peaked at No. 2 back in October 2007 and stayed on the UK Singles Chart for 38 consecutive weeks.

By 2020, Amy’s Valerie had sold over 1.5million copies in the UK.
