‘You don’t OWN Clifton, Camps Bay’: Ex DA MP slams beach party critics

Cape Town residents who complained about rowdy beach parties at Clifton and Camps Bay received a tongue-lashing from former DA MP Phumzile van Damme.

In videos posted on social media, hundreds of young people are seen blaring loud music and dancing well into the night at the popular hotspots, located in an “affluent” area.

CAMPS BAY, CLIFTON BEACH PARTIES CONTINUE TO IRK LOCALS

Earlier this month, videos of rowdy crowds descending on Cape Town’s picturesque beaches, including Camps Bay and Clifton’s 4th Beach, went viral on social media.

In the clips, scores of young people are seen singing and dancing to loud music in the sand, on rocks, and even on top of taxis. The partying goes on well into the night.

According to social media users, the visitors appear to be students partying hard ahead of their final exams. The clips quickly irked residents, who complained about the “noise” and the “decline of property values.”

Some even claimed that the world-famous beaches were being turned into a “ghetto” and likened it to Durban’s South Beach.

One X user – @kaapenaar_ – angrily  tweeted: “We need to make Clifton and Camps Bay beach pay to enter because WTF is this?”

The tweep suggested that a tariff be imposed on anyone who visits the beaches.

The tweep continued: “Residents: Free. Capetonians: R15. Foreigners: R30. Discourage antisocial behaviour, decrease litter, and create government revenue.”

When one follower questioned the motive behind the tweet, the X user responded: “To stop the rot and not become a Hillbrow by the sea. For the same reason that, some toilets cost R2 to use”.

‘IT’S A PUBLIC BEACH!’ SAYS FORMER DA MP

Former DA MP Phumzile Van Damme was one of the tweeps who took offence to the complaints about the Clifton and Camps Bay beach parties.

She tweeted: “Some people just hate to see black people having fun. Those are PUBLIC beaches. Go buy you a house with a private beach. You do not own Camps Bay and Clifton beaches; South Africa does. Rest”

She added: “These are people literally socialising and having fun. You be strong now. There’s not a damn thing you can do about it except post Karen-esque posts on Twitter. The beaches belong to all, and if there is no law-breaking”.
