Hayward police say man killed father, hid body in dumpster

HAYWARD – A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting his father at a Hayward warehouse and hiding the body in a Union City dumpster, police said.

The case kicked off Wednesday, when family members requested a welfare check for a father and son, the Hayward Police Department said in a news release. The father did not report to work earlier in the day and he was not answering his cellphone.

Officers went to a warehouse in the 2000 block of American Avenue, but no one answered the door. A record check revealed the son was on formal probation with a search clause, which allowed officers to enter the building and do a “protective sweep,” police said.

Inside, officers found signs of a fatal shooting, police said.

Detectives took over the investigation and determined that the son – identified as David Sanchez – was responsible for the homicide of his 58-year-old father, police said.

On Thursday, detectives received word from Oakland police officers that Sanchez was in custody for an unrelated incident. The officers also requested a welfare check for Sanchez’s father based on statements he reportedly made during their investigation.

Detectives told the officers about the homicide investigation and took custody of Sanchez, who was placed under arrest on suspicion of murder, according to police.

Sanchez revealed his father’s location to detectives, who found the man dead inside a dumpster in the 33000 block of Central Avenue in Union City, police said.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau will release the victim’s name after he is formally identified.

The death marked the city’s 13th homicide of the year.
