CLIF Bar is doling out millions of dollars to settle claims its labeling misled customers.
The company sells protein and snack bars that are marketed toward outdoors enthusiasts, children, and others.
The $12 million settlement alleges that the Clif Bar packaging made its products seem healthy.
Meanwhile, the bars were allegedly unhealthy as they contained high added sugar content.
The company has not admitted to any wrongdoing but it has agreed to pay $12 million to resolve the false advertising lawsuit.
This means eligible customers can score some cash, depending on which tier they are in – with a maximum payment of $50.
Customers will score $5 for up to 30 bars, $10 for between 31 and 59 bars, and $15 for over 60 bars.
Payments will be given with or without proof of purchase.
However, those who can provide proof of purchase can receive $15 for the first 60 bars.
Then, for any additional bars with proof of purchase, class members can receive 25 cents per bar for a maximum total payment of $50.
To receive payment for the settlement, all claim forms must be submitted by November 25, 2024.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?
To score the cash, customers must have purchased one of the eligible products.
This includes Clif Bars with the phrase “Nutrition for Sustained Energy” and Clif Kid ZBars with the claims “No High Fructose Corn Syrup,” “Nourishing Kids in Motion” and other similar claims.
The settlement benefits folks who purchased the Clif Bar products between April 19, 2014, and March 31, 2023, for California and New York residents.
Or between March 31, 2019, and March 31, 2023, for those outside California and New York.
What’s a class-action settlement?
Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or ‘classes,’ a way to band together in court.
These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.
When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.
Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.
These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.
Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.
IMPORTANT DATES
The lawsuit’s website has also laid out specific reminders.
The deadline for exclusion and objection was October 22, 2024.
Meanwhile, the final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for November 14, 2024.
This will determine whether the details of the settlement is approved.
Lastly, the claim form deadline is due on November 25, 2024.
