Prince Adewole Adebayo, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate in the last election, has criticised those advocating for a return to regional government, arguing it won’t improve the country’s situation.
He emphasised that the quality of leadership, not the system of government, is what determines success.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Adebayo dismissed the notion that regional governance was more efficient than the current federal structure. He explained that the past success of regions was due to strong leadership and effective public service, not the structure itself.
He went on to criticise today’s political class, describing them as “transactional” and focused more on personal gain than public welfare. He lamented that many of today’s politicians are business people, who view politics as an investment.

Adebayo also highlighted the growing influence of financiers in government, noting that ministers and commissioners are often selected to protect business interests. He argued that this has led to the failure of governance because the focus has shifted from public service to personal enrichment.
“The failure of our politics stems from the failure of our philosophy of governance,” he concluded.
