Volunteers to clean Greenville parks impacted by Helene

GREENVILLE, S.C. (WSPA) — The Greenville community is coming together to restore city parks after Hurricane Helene.

The City of Greenville and United Way of Greenville County have partnered to clean seven parks that were impacted by the storm.

The cleanup will take place Saturday morning at Gower Park, Cleveland Park, Green Avenue Memorial, Gatlin Park, McPherson Park, Sliding Rock Creek Trail and Unity Park.

“The parks play such a vital role in Greenville of having beautiful green space and opportunities for folks to enjoy this community,” said Meghan Barp, the president and CEO of United Way of Greenville County.

Dozens of volunteers will remove debris, replenish mulch and clear creeks.

The project started when people began asking United Way what they could do to help the community recover from the storm.

“Volunteers in our community since day one have been calling saying, ‘How they can help?,'” Barp said. “This is a great example of how community members can come together, clean up the parks and make sure that they are vibrant as they have been for so long in our community.”

The city asked volunteers to help with the cleanup on Tuesday. By Thursday, the city said all of the volunteer spots were filled.

“That’s one thing that makes Greenville, Greenville is that people absolutely do their part to make sure that this community is wonderful for everyone,” Barp said. “Saturday is an example of our community coming together to take that final step for our parks.”

Barp said United Way will make more volunteer opportunities available for different events in the coming weeks.
