Gavin Hunt explains his ‘beef’ with Orlando Pirates coach Riveiro

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has given more details on his altercation with Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro in Tuesday’s Betway Premiership clash

Matsatsantsa suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Orlando Stadium. Towards the end of the match, there was a touchline altercation between the two benches. Speaking on SoccerBeat, Hunt explained what happened between him and the Orlando Pirates coach.

“I don’t think he has a beef with me, maybe…I don’t know,” he said.

“There was nothing in the game until the 80th minute when one of our players made a bad tackle and he(Riveiro) started mouthing at our bench and my guys behind had a full go. It was all in the heat of the game…I just find it that in South Africa the reaction from the bench is ridiculous when someone gets touched or tackled. I think the reaction from all teams is just over the top.

Hunt was not happy with the defeat to Orlando Pirates

After the match, Hunt mentioned the fact that his club has sold their top players to the likes of Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

“You know where the team was, what it’s about, this team has the most trophies behind the big three, it’s no mean feat in 25 years,” he said.

“Look around all the teams, look at Orlando Pirates, where does four or five or those players come from, go across the road [Sundowns], look at those players, you know what I’m saying,” Hunt added.

“Youth development is not always about going up, sometimes it’s about going down, but obviously they come up a lot with us. Last year we used 13 players from the Diski team, trying to play CAF too.

“So this catches up with you. This year we played Sundowns away, Cape Town City away, Pirates away twice, Chiefs away, it’s difficult with our squad.

“We just have to grind on, obviously keep working on the training ground and doing things that [improve us], yeah it’s the only thing we can do.”

Following the defeat to Orlando Pirates on Tuesday, Hunt will face Kaizer Chiefs once again at the Peter Mokaba Stadium this weekend.
