Dr. William Ferris proposed a wonderful collaborative opportunity to allow the McAllister Museum to serve as an important educational “satellite” to the Two Mississippi Museums: Museum of Mississippi History/Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Margaret Walker Center at Jackson State University, where Dr. McAllister’s parents graduated. Dr. McAllister and Margaret Walker both taught and were close friends at Jackson State from 1951 until her retirement in 1970. Another important resource for the museum is the Mississippi Center for Justice. The Center’s programs address educational and cultural programs that connect to the museum’s goals.

The Board envisions the project as an educational center, as well as a museum. The restoration of Dr. McAllister’s historic home will hopefully create a vibrant educational hub that teachers, students, and tourists will visit each year.

The McAllister home is the only Black home in Vicksburg that is listed on the Mississippi Department of Archives and History Historic Resources Inventory. This recognition signals the importance of the museum.
