Int’l IDEA seeks reforms to improve PWDs access in prisons, courtrooms

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has called for reforms in Nigeria’s prison and judicial systems to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

This call was made during a two-day national dialogue on Integrating Inclusivity for Persons with Disabilities in Criminal Justice, supported by the European Union under the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC).

The event brought together key stakeholders from across Nigeria’s justice system, civil society, and disability rights groups to address barriers hindering PWDs’ access to justice.

The dialogue focused on the structural and systemic challenges PWDs face, including issues related to infrastructure, financial limitations, and communication barriers.

Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ibrahim Usman, underscored the need for reforms to ensure that facilities within the criminal justice system accommodate the needs of PWDs during incarceration.

Hon. Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, Chief Judge of the FCT High Court, emphasised the importance of public awareness campaigns and the integration of assistive technologies to aid PWDs in navigating the justice system.

He stressed the need for judicial staff to receive training on the specific needs of PWDs, stating, “We must ensure that the legal system not only protects but actively empowers vulnerable groups.”
