Chancellor Rachel Reeves is said to be considering a 7p-a-litre hike to help plug a £40billion black hole in finances.
It would come from scrapping the temporary 5p cut and reinstating the annual fuel duty rise — which The Sun has fought against since 2011.
This could send diesel soaring to 33p more a litre, and petrol 10p more than the European average once VAT is added.
Tory MP Saqib Bhatti said: “She must stand by manifesto commitments and back working families who rely on vehicles.”
Howard Cox from FairFuelUK added: “All European states and most developed economies recognise that fuel costs impact their nations’ commercial heartbeats, and consequently, their fuel duties are considerably lower.
“It’s a no-brainer; low pump prices deliver economic growth and more Treasury receipts.”
