According to the NHTSA report, the recall is related to a fault found with a safety device that’s meant to release hydrogen gas if the fuel tanks overheat.
This device, which is made of glass, could potentially crack and release the gas prematurely, which poses a fire risk.
Hyundai have said they will now replace this with a metal part, and they have already started installing the new part on Nexos produced from May 21, 2024.
If the current device fails, Nexo owners may notice a white cloud at the rear of the SUV, as well as a loud wind-like sound, and a rapidly depleting fuel gauge.
Owners have been advised to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings in the meantime, until the fix can be made.
The hugely popular Korean car brand will begin notifying owners by mail on December 10, and the repair will be free.
The recall will affect Nexos produced from the 2019 to 2024, and it’s thought that only about 1% of vehicles are expected to have the defect.
This comes just weeks after a Hyundai driver who owns a different model had to fight for her recalled vehicle to be returned after the automaker reportedly refused service due to a little-known loophole.
