Flooding shuts down 101 Freeway lanes near downtown Los Angeles

A broken water main left the 101 Freeway flooded Wednesday morning, prompting officials to close lanes through the Boyle Heights neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles.

The flooding was initially reported near 4th Street around 1:30 a.m. and prompted officials to issue a SigAlert for the complete shutdown of the freeway in both directions as crews worked to repair the issues.

The northbound lanes were reopened just after 4 a.m. but the southbound side remained closed, the California Highway Patrol posted in an update on X, formerly Twitter.

Video from the scene showed water still pooled across all southbound lanes of the freeway at 5 a.m.

A short time later, the CHP extended its SigAlert. Officials were looking for the freeway to reopen sometime after 5:30 a.m.
