Millions of drivers are breaking Highway Code every time they get behind the wheel – know the law & avoid £1,000 fine

MILLIONS of drivers could be breaking the Highway Code and risking a £1,000 fine every time they get behind the wheel, according to car experts.

Motorists could even find themselves in trouble with the police if they forget to take an essential item with them on the road.

There are around 48 million people in the UK who wear glasses, according to the latest data from Optical Express.

But many Brits with specs may not realise that they are actually required to keep them on when they’re in the car.

Rule 92 of the Highway Code makes it a requirement for anyone who needs prescription glasses or contact lenses to wear them at all times while driving.

Driving with impaired vision can increase the risk of accidents and make it harder to stay focused on the road.

This is particularly tricky at night and in poor weather as we move into the winter.

Not being able to see properly ahead can make it harder to spot hazards but also affects your depth perception and judgment of speed, which can have disastrous consequences.

Experts from Motor Match said: “It’s not just about complying with the law – it’s about being prepared for any situation.

“Regular eye tests and wearing glasses (when prescribed) are non-negotiable for keeping the roads safe for everyone.”

If you are stopped and found not to be wearing your glasses, you could be hit with a £1,000 fine and licence points, they warned.

However, if you are unlucky enough to get into a crash, the penalties can be even more severe as you might find yourself on the wrong end of a dangerous driving charge.

This can carry an unlimited fine and even land you with prison time if the smash is bad enough.

Fortunately, the Motor Match team had some handy advice on how to make sure you’re never caught short-sighted.

They added: “We always recommend that drivers keep a spare pair of glasses in the car.

“This simple step means you’ll never find yourself in a position where you’re caught without them, particularly on longer journeys or in poor driving conditions.

“Keeping your vision in top condition and ensuring that you follow all safety guidelines, including wearing corrective lenses if necessary, will help prevent accidents and keep you on the right side of the law.”

It comes after drivers were warned of two huge rule changes that could be brought in to tackle dangerous driving.
