Don’t allow languages, culture go extinct, parents urged

The Executive Secretary, National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, has called on parents to always speak their languages to their children so that they do not go into extinction.

Speaking at a press conference to mark the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, he urged parents to also ensure that they insisted on cultural virtues and lifestyles for their children so that cultures do not go to extinction.

He said civilisation and migration have led young people to abandon their cultures and languages, hence the institute would use the means of advocacy to reach out to younger people on the need to embrace their languages and cultures.

He said the nation’s unity and value would be threatened if languages and cultures a left to go into extinction.

Ajiboye noted that the institute was coming up with an institution called Nigerian Academy for Cultural Studies which was designed for younger people to promote and teach them about languages and culture of the country.

He also said that even though the nation has its diverse languages, there was the need for a national language, hence the institute would research and come up with its findings.
