Emergency services were called to the scenic spot in Greenfield, Oldham, Greater Manchester, at 2.30pm yesterday following reports of a man and woman in the water.

The pair, both believed to be in their late 20s, reportedly fell off a paddleboard and into the water.

Simon is said to have encountered difficulty in the water, while the woman was rescued and treated for hypothermia and shock by paramedics.

Specialist divers and rescue teams then launched a search for the missing man.

Throughout Sunday afternoon and evening, rescue units were spotted in boats as they scoured the water.

Fire service crews and members of specialist diving teams were seen parked with their blue lights flashing near the sailing club.

Last night, at around 7.35pm, Greater Manchester Police said underwater teams would continue their search at the reservoir overnight.

This morning, a spokesperson for the force confirmed that there had sadly been no updates in the search overnight.

Search efforts are ongoing today and people have been warned to stay away from the area as crews continue their work.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “At shortly before 2.30pm yesterday (Sunday 20 October) fire crews were called to Dove Stone Reservoir in Oldham following reports of a person in the water.

“Two fire engines from Mossley and Stalybridge, an enhanced rescue unit from Leigh, a water incident unit from Eccles, an air unit and two drones including an underwater drone from Lancashire Fire and Rescue were called to the scene.

“A throw line was used by a member of the public and one casualty was rescued from the water prior to fire service arrival.

“Police helicopter, police, ambulance and mountain rescue also attended.

“Fire service were in attendance for approximately four hours and forty minutes.”

Simon’s friends have expressed their sorrow on Facebook, sending their best wishes to his family during this difficult time.

One of his friends shared a news report of the search with the caption: “In utter shock. My thoughts go out to your family at this time.”

“Praying for your safe return,” another wrote.

And a third user said: “Come on Simon Daniels I really hope they find you very soon pal.

“I was only talking to you Friday night. Sending thoughts to your family and friends.”

The Sun has contacted Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service for comment.
