ISLAMABAD (AP) — Officials say Pakistan has witnessed a surge in new polio cases ahead of a new nationwide campaign, hampering years-long efforts aimed at making the country a polio-free state. Since January, health officials have confirmed 39 new polio cases in Pakistan, compared to only six last year, despite conducting multiple campaigns. Anwarul Haq of the National Emergency Operation Center for Polio Eradication said the new nationwide anti-polio drive would be launched from Oct. 28 to vaccinate at least 32 million children. Pakistan regularly launches polio campaigns despite attacks on workers and police assigned to inoculation drives.
