Tim Allen is returning to his sitcom roots with upcoming ABC comedy Shifting Gears.

He’ll be playing Matt, described as the “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop,” per the official logline.

American Pie hunk Seann William Scott is the latest cast addition.

Seann, 48, has signed on to portray Gabriel, a family friend of Matt who works in the shop with him.

Gabriel replaces Nick (Froy Gutierrez), Matt’s son, who appeared in the pilot but will not be part of the series.

Previously, Seann starred as “Steve Stifler” in the American Pie franchise, spanning 1999 to 2012.

His other films include Road Trip, Dude Where’s My Car?, the Ice Age series and two Goon movies.

Shifting Gears marks only Seann’s third regular TV role in his almost 30-year career.

The cast also includes Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter and Barrett Margolis as Georgia.

Lead actor Tim played Tim “Tool Man” Taylor on ABC’s Home Improvement for eight seasons.

His later sitcom Last Man Standing ran for nine seasons altogether.

Tim’s iconic film parts include Scott Calvin/Santa Claus in The Santa Clause series and Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story franchise.

Another classic, Galaxy Quest, saw him co-star with Shifting Gears castmate Daryl “Chill” Mitchell”.

From 2022, he reprised the role of Scott Calvin/Santa Claus in Disney+ series The Santa Clauses.

Tim Allen’s career so far

By Conor O’Brien

Actor and comedian Tim Allen has appeared in several beloved projects across his decades-long career.

Here is a look at some of Tim’s biggest hits.

  • Home Improvement (1991-1999): Tim starred in this beloved ABC sitcom for eight seasons. He played the role of Tim “Tool Man” Taylor, a know-it-all who believes he has a wide knowledge of tools and mechanics – despite this not being the case. Tim hosts a show called “Tool Time” with his friend Al Borland and is often prone to mishaps. In the show, Tim Taylor is married to Jill (Patricia Richardson), with three sons – Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and Mark (Taran Noah Smith).
  • The Santa Clause (1994 – present): To date, Tim’s played Scott Calvin in three films and a Disney+ series. In the first movie (1994), Scott becomes the new Santa Claus after the previous one fell off Scott’s roof. Fully adopting the Santa Claus identity thereafter, the other films were released in 2002 and 2006. Beginning in 2022, Tim reprised the role in a Disney+ show titled The Santa Clauses.
  • Toy Story (1995 – present): Tim first played iconic toy space ranger Buzz Lightyear in 1995’s Toy Story, which was also Pixar’s first film offering. In the first of the beloved animated films, Buzz is unaware of his identity as a toy and comes to terms with this fact towards the end. Three further movies were released in 1999, 2010 and 2019 – with another instalment on the way.
  • Last Man Standing (2011-2021): For nine seasons collectively, Tim played the lead character Mike Baxter in sitcom Last Man Standing. Mike is a husband, father of three,  director of marketing for the Outdoor Man chain of sporting goods stores. Another key trait is his politics, which are staunchly traditional and conservative. The show first aired on ABC for six seasons, before moving over to Fox for its last three seasons.

Rounding out the core cast, 2 Broke Girls’ alum Kat Jennings is playing Riley, Matt’s daughter.

The 38-year-old also appeared as Darcy Lewis in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, primarily in the Thor films.

She also played Darcy in the popular Disney+ series WandaVision.

Shifting Gears will air on ABC.
