This Niceville Charity Got A Big Donation – Thanks to a Mortgage Company. Here’s Why That Matters To You:

In Brief:

•The Niceville CALM House received a $10,000 donation from Movement Mortgage, following a nomination by local Loan Officer Steve Schutt.

•CALM House provides transitional housing and support to mothers and children in crisis, helping prevent separations between newborns and mothers.

•Schutt’s ongoing involvement, including financial advice and community support, has positively impacted the program and its participants.

The Niceville CALM House earned one of 100 $10,000 donations from Movement Mortgage for their needs – thanks to local Loan Officer Steve Schutt’s nomination.

The Charity has helped 55 moms and 77 kids since it opened its doors for the first time on October 16, 2018.

A Florida law requires women to have an address to go to when they are released from the hospital – otherwise, the newborn is put into foster care. CALM has saved seven mothers and babies from separation by giving them a place to stay once they leave the hospital.

The nomination is the second donation from Movement Mortgage’s partner company, Graceworks. The company was set up by movement and donated all of its profits to charities like the CALM House in $10,000 grants.

“That’s the reason I work for the movement,” Schutt told the leadership of CALM Niceville at the check presentation, “[Movement] also allows us to impact my local community.”

The $10,000 award was handed to more than just CALM, though. Schutt said the company’s employees get together and vote on what the grants will go to – after they are nominated.

Not To Brag On Our Boy, But…

The CALM Board of Directors members were naturally very grateful for the $10,000 check for their use towards their mission of helping women with small children become self-sustaining, contributing members of society. But, they also had plenty to say about Schutt – who is the Niceville Chamber of Commerce’s next chairman of the board, among his many other contributions to the Niceville community.

Grace Nuffer, the past president of CALM House noted that Steve has been a helper with his time and talent in addition to this donation from Graceworks. She initially roped him into supporting the non-profit by asking him to give the women in the program financial advice – specifically to owning a home. Nuffer said the women in the CALM program asked a lot of questions – but it wasn’t just the answers that mattered. “What he did that night, he answered questions – but he did something else, he gave them hope,” Nuffer recalled, “He gave those moms hope.”

Nuffer added that one of the moms Steve helped is now a loan officer.

Since that evening, Schutt has been back to consult with the women in the program about getting their credit in order. His wife, Leanne, serves on the board of CALM as well.

More About CALM

The CALM (Crisis Aid for Littles and Moms) house, off Redwood Avenue in the Niceville area, serves moms who need “transitional housing and life skills training” and are in a crisis situation.

According to their website, the two founders, Grace Nuffer and Terri Steadman, were “serving single moms in a local church life group. They quickly realized the need for a program to assist moms from poverty to self-sustainment.”

In 2017, a donor gave them the property, and they now have a facility that serves moms and children in need. Since they opened, they have expanded to provide independent living transitional homes for moms and their kids as they work toward financial independence.
