Home Depot admits it ‘understands concerns’ after shopper slams payment method options before warning not to copy rival

HOME Depot has made an admission to shoppers after coming under fire over its payment policies.

Customers looking for an easy trip to the store have lashed out at the hardware chain over the policy.

Home Depot is one of the few retailers that doesn’t accept Apple Pay.

And one shopper claimed the chain needs to move into the 21st century by embracing the payment method, per a post on X.

A Home Depot spokesperson responded to the shopper’s frustration and said: “We understand your concern.”

They confirmed that the chain was evaluating particular payment methods.

“We thank you for sharing your feedback and this inquiry has been shared with leadership for review,” the spokesperson added.

But the shopper issued a warning to execs making decisions on payment methods.

They begged Home Depot bosses not to copy Walmart by rolling out a QR code platform.

The Walmart in-store app features a QR code, which shoppers can scan at the checkout to pay for goods.

Apple Pay is a glaring omission from the payment options available to Home Depot shoppers.

Shoppers can pay for goods via Visa, MasterCard, cash, or money stored on a gift card.

So far Home Depot bosses have not yet rolled out the payment method, but that hasn’t stopped customers from sharing their feelings on the issue.

“It’s almost 2025,” one customer pointed out as they slammed the chain.

Shoppers said it was “annoying” to rummage in their wallets for credit cards.

One furious customer said they had boycotted Home Depot over its payment method policy.

Why doesn’t Walmart offer Apple Pay?

CEO of Walmart Doug McMillon has revealed why stores don’t offer Apple Pay on Stratechery with Ben Thompson.

Though using Apple Pay at the retailer has been an ongoing conversation, McMillon emphasized that “We would like to have the customers open our app in the store all the time.”

The app can be used to help find items in the store, but it can also be used to pay for your purchases.

“That’s one of the things that we would like people to use our app for,” he said.

Walmart has also been criticized for not rolling out Apple Pay, but it doesn’t seem likely that it will be a feature in supermarkets anytime soon.

CEO Doug McMillon said he prefers shoppers using the chain’s in-store app.

But the top exec didn’t rule out the chain, one day, teaming up with the major tech giant, per Stratechery

“Those conversations are ongoing,” he said.

“I think in our case, we would like to have the customers open our app in the store all the time.”

Earlier this week, it was reported that H-E-B- shoppers would be able to start paying for items using Apple Pay.

“At H-E-B, we’re always exploring a broad range of technologies to enhance how customers shop and pay for products,” Ashwin Nathan, the company’s Vice President of Marketing and Payments, said.

Mobile payment services will be rolled out across the chain’s portfolio of stores in about a month, according to estimates.
