Convicted killer Susan Smith charged after speaking with filmmaker

GREENWOOD, S.C. (WSPA) – Convicted killer Susan Smith has been convicted of a disciplinary charge weeks before her parole hearing.

Smith, of Union County, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her children in Oct. 1994.

The SC Department of Corrections confirmed with 7NEWS that on Aug. 26, Smith was charged with communicating with a victim and/or witness. She was convicted Thursday, Oct. 3, of an internal disciplinary charge after speaking with a documentary filmmaker while in prison.

The charge involved telephone calls with a documentary filmmaker about her crimes according to officials. It was reported that Smith agreed to provide the filmmaker with contact information for friends, family and victims, including her ex-husband.

Officials said the filmmaker also deposited money into Smith’s account.

The Department of Corrections said that Smith’s actions violated the SCDC policy. Inmates are not allowed to do interviews on the telephone or in person while in custody.

Inmates are also allowed, if granted, to receive tablets that are secured for correctional use to make monitored phone calls and send messages according to the SCDC.

Smith lost her telephone, tablet and canteen privileges for 90 days, beginning Oct. 4.

The department will determine when and if inmate Smith will earn the opportunity to be issued a tablet again.

Smith is still eligible for parole on Nov. 4. according to officials.
