Sharad Purnima is a very significant festival of Hinduism which occurs during the full moon day of Ashwin month. The day is also significant for an important reason because it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi appeared on this day and, hence, is celebrated as Lakshmi Jayanti. It is considered that on this day Mother Lakshmi comes to earth in a happy mood and blessed her devotees. The special thing is that the moon is also full of its 16 arts on this day, and its rays rain nectar. On the day of Sharad Purnima, kheer is kept in the rays of the moon, which is consumed as prasad the next day. As such, it serves as a sign of health and prosperity achieved.
This is said to be the worship of Mother Lakshmi and Lord Vishnu as per puja method. Kheer is prepared and kept under the moonlight. This process is thought to infuse medicinal properties in kheer. The sunrise this day is also special because it is called “Kojagiri Purnima,” meaning “who is awake.” A devotee, who stays up all night, and worships Goddess Lakshmi, is given special blessings.
Another legend is attached to Sharad Purnima—the Raas Leela of Lord Krishna and the Gopis. This day is also famous as Raas Purnima, because it is believed that on this night Lord Krishna performed Raas with the Gopis in Vrindavan.
