App State Field Hockey Falls to Top Ranked North Carolina

The App State field hockey team fell to No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday to a score of 5-0.

The Mountaineers (7-6, 4-1 MAC) came into today’s matchup after previously falling to Liberty, with today’s loss to North Carolina (10-0, 4-0 ACC) the second loss to an ACC opponent this season.

Senior Claire Grenis tallied a career high 11 saves in Sunday’s matchup, beating her previous high of ten in the Oct. 10 matchup against Liberty.

The Mountaineers held their own in the opening period, controlling possession in the attacking third. Charly Bruder scored the opening goal for the Tar Heels, giving them a 1-0 lead going into the second period.

The Mountaineers continued to make it tough for the Tar Heels, not allowing a penalty corner in the second period. Grenis tallied four saves in the period, making giving her a total of six saves going into the break. North Carolina’s Ryleigh Heck found the back of the cage in the second, giving the Tar heels a 2-0 lead going into halftime.

It was more of the same for North Carolina in the third period, as the Tar Heels found the back of the cage late. Molly Catchpole scored the third goal of the contest as the time expired in the third, giving the Tar Heels as 3-0 lead going into the final period.

To finish the game, the Tar Heels tacked on two more goals, both from Bruder early in the period. The Mountaineers finished Sunday’s matchup falling to UNC 5-0.

The Mountaineers will stay in Boone to face off against conference opponent Ball State on Friday. First touch is slated for 6 p.m. as we celebrate our seniors on Senior Day.
