Target to close all 1,956 stores for entire day in the coming weeks – forcing shoppers to switch up their plans

TARGET has confirmed thousands of its stores will be closed for a whole day in the coming weeks.

The decision will mean shoppers will need to switch up their plans so they don’t get stuck.

Target will shutter all of its locations to commemorate Thanksgiving this year

All 1,956 Target stores will be closed to mark Thanksgiving, which falls on November 28 this year, the chain announced.

Bosses have allowed workers to have the day off to celebrate the holiday with their families.

FOLLOWING TRADITION

This year will be the fifth consecutive year that supermarkets will shut up shop for the November celebration.

Target said in a statement last November that it would permanently all locations unless stated otherwise.

CEO Brian Cornell said in a statement in 2023: “It’s hard to believe nearly four years have passed since we last opened our stores on Thanksgiving.

“Staying closed for the first time on Thanksgiving Day 2020 helped us take care of our team and guests during the pandemic.

“But once I heard from team members how much they appreciated that time with their families, it was an easy decision to make the policy permanent.

“And our store teams have had that time off ever since.”

Cornell said that keeping Target‘s stores closed on Thanksgiving was possible “because we’ve built our team — and Target’s strong business model — to deliver on our guests’ holiday wishes both within and well beyond store hours.”

The boss also praised employees’ work ethics, saying: “I and many others have happy memories of holidays spent in stores with our work families.

“But we also know there’s no substitute for the real thing, especially on a family-centered holiday like Thanksgiving.

“Which is why it’s good to see other retailers coming around to the approach we’ve been following for years.”

OTHER CLOSURES

Many chains have not yet announced their holiday hours yet.

Last year, Walmart, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and Costco were among the retailers that were closed for Thanksgiving.

All Publix and Sam’s Club warehouses were also shut, allowing workers to mark the holiday.

Trader Joe’s stores across the nation closed their doors for one day.

The company says it has shuttered stores for the Thanksgiving holiday for more than 30 years.

Aldi, Best Buy, and JCPenney locations also closed last year to mark the celebration.

Walgreens chiefs made the historic decision last year to close most of its stores for Thanksgiving.

But its 24-hour stores remained open – despite the holiday.

Kroger, Albertsons, and Whole Foods shoppers were warned that stores’ timetables would differ depending on location.

Shoppers needing last-minute groceries could still buy items from Dollar General and Big Lots stores.
