Kaizer Chiefs main target: Asanele Velebayi transfer update

Kaizer Chiefs’ winter transfer window intentions were no secret – they wanted Cape Town City’s Asanele Velebayi.

The twenty-one-year-old winger has long caught the attention of AmaKhosi management, so much so that they were fighting for his signature in the build-up to this year’s PSL.

While nothing materialised, they are still keen on the attacking player and could sign him as early as January.

Nabi’s attacking concerns

Following Nabi Nasreddine’s Cufa Cup win on the weekend, the Tunisian coach was unhappy with his side’s attacking display, meaning there could be extra motivation to sign Cape Town native Velabayi.

“It was a very intense game; it was an excellent thing [winning the Cufa Cup], but we created many chances,

“This is a big, big problem [missing scoring opportunities]. I want a winning mentality. There are no friendly games. In friendly games, you need a positive attitude and a winning attitude. In exercises and training, I want to win. If I lose, it’s a problem. I don’t sleep. I want this mentality”, Nabi said after the match.

Kaizer Chiefs current form

Having finished last season in 10th place, the Chiefs are looking to bounce back in style, and they have.

While they sit sixth on the log, that doesn’t reflect their performances, winning two of their three opening league games.

On the pitch, they seem more resilient and able to absorb and instil pressure easily.

Goalkeeper Brandon Peterson provided an insight into what life is like under new coach Nabi, telling Independent Media, “He Is a coach with principles. He Is a coach that wants you to do what he expects you to do. And he won’t expect you to do something that you can’t do,

“He knows the quality we have at Chiefs and he knows each and every player and what he’s capable of. So for me, it’s the fact of trying to bring that out of a player. And, when it’s time to work, it’s time to work. He’ll be shouting, he’ll be grinding us, but as you can see, it’s paying dividends on the field.

“There’s time to joke, there’s time to have a good time, but when it’s working, it’s about working. And I think the switch up we made as players, it’s a fine line between going out and having fun and when it’s time to work.

“That’s the important thing for us this season, we look like we’re getting it right. It’s making that switch up; when it comes to working, we’re working”.
