Zimbabwean billionaire and Econet Wireless founder Strive Masiyiwa is one of the ten richest black people in the world in 2024.

The list was compiled and curated by Business Insider Africa. It has African business people and global stars.

Strive Masiyiwa Is One Of The Richest Black People In The World

Strive Masiyiwa made the cut with a total net worth of US$1.8 billion. The telecommunications magnate is in position 10. Overall, he is the 1848th richest person in the world.

Masiyiwa’s wealth is quite vast. Some of his notable companies and investments include Mascom Wireless Botswana, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, and Econet Wireless Nigeria (now Airtel Nigeria). He also invested in Liquid Intelligent Technologies Group, Econet Wireless New Zealand (now 2 Degrees Mobile), and Trilogy Capital Partners Canada as an early investor.

His portfolio includes Cassava Technologies, Africa Data Centres, Sasai Fintech, and Telrad Group Israel. He remains active in private investments through his investment firms and family office.

Masiyiwa also sits on the boards of Netflix Inc. as a Non-Executive Director, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and on the Board of Trustees of the National Geographic Society.

On top of the top 10 richest black people list is David Steward from the United States. Steward, worth US$11.4 billion, founded and is the chairman of IT provider World Wide Technology. The company has expertise in AI, cloud, networking, cybersecurity, data analytics, automation, digital transformation and more.

Nigerian manufacturing giant Aliko Dangote is second on the list, with a net worth of US$11.3 billion. American billion Robert F Smith is in third with US$10.3 billion. He is the founder, CEO, and chair of Vista Equity Partners, which has invested exclusively in software, data, and technology-enabled organisations.

Coming in fourth is Nigerian billionaire Mike Adenuga (US$6.7 billion), who founded Globacom, which owns GLO Network. In fifth position is Nigeria’s Abdulsamad Rabiu, who is in the cement and sugar industry.

Following on sixth is basketball legend Michael Jordan, worth US$3.5 billion. Talk show queen Oprah Winfrey comes in seventh position with US$3 billion.

In eighth place is South African billionaire and CAF president Patrice Motsepe, worth US$3 billion. With US$2.5 billion, Rapper Jay-Z is in ninth position, while Strive Masiyiwa is in tenth.
