Spiders are often overlooked in the home as they choose to hide in dark spaces that are rarely disturbed.

However, as autumn starts male house spiders are seen scurrying around in search of a female to mate with.

Chris Houghton is an expert at HomeServe, a UK-based company specialising in plumbing, electrics, and boiler issues.

Speaking to The Sun, he shared three cost-effective solutions for keeping spiders out of the home.

FRAGRANT FIX

Houghton said essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, or eucalyptus can be mixed with water to make a non-toxic spider-repellent.

“These oils can usually be found in pharmacies and all you need to do is mix it with water in a spray bottle and spray across your surfaces,” he said.

“Spiders hate the strong smells so stay away.”

Amazon’s Nikura Store sells each of the three oils for £4.99 each.

One shopper raved they hadn’t seen a spider in their room since they sprayed eucalyptus oil.

“I’ve been using it to repel the spiders from the house! As recommended by a friend. Smells pleasant too,” another said.

INCREDIBLE INGREDIENT

Houghton revealed an ingredient many people already have in their kitchens can be just as effective.

“Vinegar, like essential oils, can be mixed with water and sprayed in spider-prone areas,” he said.

“While the initial smell may be strong, it fades once dried, though spiders can still detect it.

“This natural repellent helps keep spiders at bay without being overwhelming for humans, making it an effective, non-toxic option for your home.”

POWERFUL PLANTS

Spiders may be deterred from entering the home in the first place if the right plants are positioned near entry points.

“Herbs such as mint, rosemary and lavender are also natural spider repellents,” he said.

“If you have space near your window sills or doorways, line some pots up nearby containing these herbs to keep these eight-legged foes at bay.”

Fresh mint and rosemary are sold at ASDA for just £1 each.

According to the supermarket, the fragrant herbs stay fresh when positioned on a window sill and watered from the bottom as needed.
