Has There Ever Been a Seahorse Emoji? Is It a Case of the 'Mandela Effect'? Exploring the Controversy

Did a Seahorse Emoji ever exist on the Apple platform? The internet is alive with debates about whether the Seahorse Emoji ever existed or if it was later removed.

The debate started when an Instagram reel showed a content creator asking the Google Gemini AI if a seahorse emoji ever existed on the iPhone.

The Gemini AI responded negatively, and a huge debate started. Many netizens contend that the iPhone once had a seahorse emoji that no longer exists.

However, most iPhone users can’t remember if the Seahorse Emoji ever existed, and the situation is much akin to the case of the ‘Mandela effect’.

Was There Ever A Seahorse Emoji?

The video soon became viral on major social media platforms, with many users spinning conspiracy theories behind the removal of the Seahorse Emoji.

However, all these talks happened even though there was never a Seahorse Emoji on the iPhone, and no one has claimed that they ever saw it.

This led to the spawning of the idea that it was another instance of the ‘Mandela Effect’.

What Is the ‘Mandela Effect’?

For the unversed, the ‘Mandela Effect’ is an instance where several persons collectively cannot recollect something and they start propounding something which is false and preposterous. The ‘Mandela Effect’ can be traced to Nelson Mandela, the former South African President who spent more than 27 years in prison before he was released after the end of Apartheid. Many believed that Nelson Mandela had died in prison.

There is a sub on Reddit that talks and archives instances of the ‘Mandela Effect’ by way of comments by users. The ‘Mandela Effect’ is quite common and there are thousands of examples, and the case of the disappearing Emoji was also discussed there.

Further, Unicode, the organization that approves and maintains emojis across devices, shows no evidence in its history that a seahorse emoji ever existed. Also, the claim that Apple may have deleted the emoji is also not true since the Cupertino giant never manages the emoji library; this is done by Unicode. Sadly, for Seahorse Emoji lovers, no such emoji ever existed. A proposal to this effect was made in 2018 but it was rejected by Unicode.

Other animals like crabs, puffer fish, and seal emoji do exist, and people may have been led to believe that a Emoji may also have been in existence, a classic case of the Mandela Effect.
