Dussehra, known as Vijayadashami in some regions, is the greatest festival of Hinduism. It depicts the story of good over evil and happens on the Dashami Tithi of Ashwin Shukla Paksha annually. Dussehra is associated with the killing legend of Ravana by Lord Rama and also the killing day of Mahishasura by Goddess Durga. Dussehra festival this year will be on 12 October, 2024.
There has been slight confusion regarding the date of Dussehra this year. As the Dashami Tithi would be two days long, starting from 10:58 am on October 12 to 9:08 am on October 13. Just like with the other festivities in Hinduism, the Udaya Tithi is when Dussehra is also usually celebrated. Thus, according to that, this year Dussehra would fall on 12 October 2024.
It is believed in religions that Lord Rama killed the king of Lanka, named Ravana, on the Dashami date of Ashwin Shukla Paksha. The killing of Ravana is the most vivid event of Ramayana, where Lord Rama defeats him in a battle to win back his wife Sita, who has been held captive by Ravana. Along with this, another celebration is the killing of Mahishasura by Goddess Durga. On this day, Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura, and due to this, she felt relieved. Hence, this festival is celebrated with great fanfare across India and Nepal.
On Dussehra, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad are burnt across the country. This marks the end of evil in the symbolic form of Ravana. The time of Ravana Dahan will commence from 5:54 pm on October 12 of this year and will be kept on hold for nearly two and half hours. During that process, gigantic effigies of Ravana are burnt all around India and a number of people collect together to watch it. This festival symbolizes the triumph of good over evil and thousands of people gather to see it.
Dussehra is not just the celebration of religious festivals but is actually a part of rich Indian culture and traditions. Fairs and other cultural programs are celebrated on this day throughout the country. The whole life story of Lord Rama is depicted in the form of Ramlila dramatically. In this way, an essential message is given to society that no matter how big an evil becomes, truth and goodness will ultimately prevail.
Apart from India, it is also celebrated in Nepal, and there it is called Dashain. In fact, it is declared the biggest festival of Nepal and, in the days of Dashain, people here throng to the doors of their loved ones to share good wishes with them. The festival of Dashain goes for 15 days in Nepal, and during all those days, the special worship of Maa Durga is done. The tradition also involves sacrificing animals to appease the Goddess Durga on Dashain.
