Spartanburg Humane Society tells residents to stop abandoning pets, post-hurricane

SPARTANBURG S.C. (WSPA) – More and more people have been unable to take care of their pets after Hurricane Helene.

The Spartanburg Humane Society said people are dropping their pets off outside the building, and how it needs to stop.

The Spartanburg Humane Society has been receiving animals on their doorstep after Hurricane Helene. CEO Angel Cox said they have more than 550 animals, which is 25 more than they can fit comfortably, but leaving them outside is not the solution.

Cox said she wants people to understand that in devastating situations like Helene, these animals go through emotions as well.

We asked Cox what people could do if they wanted to surrender these animals, but she said everyone in the area is pretty much at their capacity.

The Spartanburg Humane Society tells us currently there are 260 people that are on a waitlist to surrender their pet. If you are interested in adopting or fostering an animal go to the Humane Society’s website.
