Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is one of the prominent Hindu festivals. This festival shows the victory of good over evil and holds importance in terms of religion, culture, and history. On this day, the Lord Shri Ram killed Ravana and Goddess Durga killed the demon named Mahishasura. Hence, it is considered a symbol of victory. Dussehra is celebrated with great pomp not only in India but also in the neighboring countries such as Nepal, which they call ‘Dashain’.
This year Dussehra will be celebrated on 12th October 2024. Although the Dashami Tithi will start at 10:58 am on 12th October and will end at 9:08 am on 13th October 2024, but according to Panchang, the festival will be celebrated on 12th October itself. Apart from this, many auspicious yogas are also being formed on this day, which makes this day even more important.
According to the Ramayana, it is said that Lord Shri Ram killed the demon Ravana on the tenth day of Dashami. As when Ravana kidnapped Mother Sita, he started a tussle with Ravana to get his wife back. In this war, Shri Ram along with his little brother Lakshman and devotee Hanuman killed Ravana and his army. So, the festival of Dussehra is associated with the spirit of victory.
Dussehra is also associated with the story of Mahishasura Mardini, the war between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura. Mahishasura was an evil demon who had committed atrocities in all three worlds. Goddess Durga fought him on the request of the gods, defeated, killed him after a long battle, and hence Goddess Durga is called Mahishasura Mardini; that is why this day is particularly worshiped to Goddess Durga.
Dussehra is a festival that not only is religious but also marks the victory of truth over untruth. This asserts that morality and justice are major factors in life. Considering this day is important, it is thus believed to be one of the Abujh Muhurat, that is, marriage, housewarming, and other auspicious works can be done on this day without any special Muhurat.
