In shocking news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, it’s been reported that a SuperSport crew became the victims of a shocking incident while travelling to cover an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Libya’s Mediterranean Knights.
The seven-person crew was reportedly kidnapped on Wednesday while travelling from Lagos en route to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
According to respected football journalist and former Super Eagles Media Officer, Colin Udoh, who broke the news on his X page, one member of the SuperSport production crew was said to have been tragically killed.
Renowned South African anti-crime activist also reported on the incident, writing on X: “A SuperSport TV crew of seven were attacked and kidnapped in Anambra, Nigeria on their way from Lagos to cover an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match in Uyo. Six were rescued but one of the technical crew was shot and killed.”
DETAILS ARE STILL EMERGING ABOUT THE SHOCKING INCIDENT INVOLVING THE SUPERSPORT CREW
In another report by the Punch Newspaper, six sports journalists were now said to have been rescued by police in Anambra State after they had been kidnapped along the Isseke-Orlu Road.
Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the rescue efforts, but suggested one journalist had still not been found.
“The joint security forces have rescued six members of the media crew who were abducted while travelling from Lagos to Uyo,” Ikenga said. “Operations are still ongoing to rescue the last journalist and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya is scheduled to take place on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo.
