England U21 vs Ukraine U21 preview
England men’s under-21s conclude their UEFA U21 EURO qualifying campaign with two matches against Ukraine and Azerbaijan.
The Young Lions currently sit in second position behind group leaders Ukraine, who boast a 100% record having won all eight of their qualifiers – scoring 19 goals and conceding just four.
England have won six of their eight, losing to Ukraine 3-2 in the reverse fixture before a rather flat goalless draw with Northern Ireland during the last international break.
The hosts will need to beat Ukraine on Friday and hope their opponents drop points against Serbia in their finale to secure automatic qualification for next summer’s U21 EURO Finals in Slovakia.
The nine group winners and the three best runners-up will qualify directly for the final tournament.
The holders, with Ben Futcher in interim charge while Lee Carsley has taken over the senior side, have scored more than any of the sides in qualification with 32.
And that number should grow with Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap leading the line with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Morgan Rodgers and Jaden Philogene likely to start in behind him.

These aren’t really the kinds of sides to sit back. The pair have scored a combined 51 goals in eight matches during qualification. England will stick to their attacking principals and that should yield a fair few goals as it did in the reverse fixture, which ended 3-2 to Ukraine.
