New England Patriots make major Drake Maye bench decision with struggling NFL squad looking to kickstart season

THE New England Patriots made a huge move concerning rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

The NFL team has now lost four games in a row after their upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1.

The 2024 first-round pick Maye will take over as the New England Patriots‘ starting quarterback, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The 22-year-old will start against the Houston Texans in Week 6.

Maye has been getting reps in practice with New England’s offense to get him ready to play in game-day action.

Under veteran signal-caller Jacoby Brissett, as the team’s starter, the Patriots went 1-4 and averaged 12.4 points per game.

He hasn’t been in an ideal situation, playing behind five different starting offensive line combinations and throwing to a wide receiver group that ranks last in the NFL in receptions (39) and receiving yards (342).

However, Brissett is 79-of-135 for 686 yards, with just two touchdowns and one interception in five games.

His latest start saw him not reach 100 passing yards until the fourth quarter.

“It just wasn’t good enough,” Mayo told reporters about Brissett’s Week 5 performance versus the Miami Dolphins on Monday.

“I thought we played well enough defensively and on special teams to win the football game.

“As the quarterback – and he understands this – he touches the ball on every single play, and we didn’t win the game or score enough points to win the game.

“I think he would echo that same sentiment that it wasn’t good enough.”

Maye played one game this season as he entered the Week 3 loss to the New York Jets.

The North Carolina product completed 4-of-8 passes for 22 yards.

Maye also rushed two times for 12 yards.

The Patriots have yet to publicly announce Maye as the squad’s starter.

Still, the writing is on the wall when it comes to the team’s direction at signal-caller.

New England sits in last in the AFC East.

The rebuilding team is expected to play Maye, who signed a four-year, $36.6 million over the summer.

Maye played two seasons at UNC and was the Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the Atlantic Coast Conference as a redshirt freshman in 2022.
